Editorial Review:

Amazon.com Essential Video:
Few early rockers were more gifted or less honored in their prime than the late Roy Orbison, whose vaulting tenor and vulnerable love songs conjured heartbreak and desire with operatic intensity. This 1987 concert special, originally broadcast on Showtime, came two decades after Orbison had retreated from pop's front lines, yet neither Orbison nor his music coasts on mere nostalgia: in every respect, A Black and White Night survives as a triumphant performance and a superb video production, as well as a first-rate retrospective of Orbison's hits.

Filmed in black and white against the streamlined art deco stage of the since-demolished Coconut Grove in downtown Los Angeles, the concert is buoyed by a remarkable cast of A-list Orbison fans who signed on as his accompanists. Under the direction of producer T-Bone Burnett, the stage band thus includes Jackson Browne, Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, and Jennifer Warnes, along with the rhythm section from Elvis Presley's fabled late '60s and early '70s touring band. That astonishing lineup is all the more noteworthy for the restraint with which they collaborate--it's evident that those superstars came to honor Orbison, not upstage him, resulting in a gratifying cohesion to the performances.

Orbison himself sounds as powerful as ever, his soaring falsetto cresting as dramatically as it did on the studio versions of the hits that inevitably dominate. Those songs meanwhile confirm that his blue chip admiration society came as much for the caliber of his writing as for his ravishing voice: if he remains best known for the jaunty come-on of "Pretty Woman," Orbison was first and foremost a rock balladeer, capable of bringing lumps to our throats with such classics as "Crying" and "Only the Lonely," or conjuring romantic trances through such gentle charmers as "Dream Baby." On this night, he handled all of them with fervor and finesse. --Sam Sutherland

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Heureux de l'avoir acheté !

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - In a word, AMAZING
Just a year before his death in 1989, Roy Orbison, riding on the coattails of substantial success with The Traveling Wilburys and simultaneously working on the great album "Mystery Girl" (released posthumously in 1989), gathered together a few dozen of his musical best friends and put off a dynamite show.

Orbison's haunting vocals did not flag one bit through the years, and this concert pays testament to this fact. Absolutely stellar cast backing him up: Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, kd Lang, Jennifer Warnes, Tom Waits et. al. I will leave the rest to guess. :-)

I saw this concert on PBS recently and very much look forward to watching it in Blu-Ray. I should probably mention it is filmed in black and white, hence ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Pure Orbison Bliss
One of the main strengths of this films that it is not peppered with dialog and odd celebrities that evidently never saw Roy, describing his life and works.

The presentation, recorded live at the Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles, moves quickly from one song to the next. And even though the visuals are good it is the music that makes this well worth the purchase. If you have a favorite it is here. Songs are more than disembodied entertainment. As with most people they bring back memories or create new memories that are associated with them. We can see that they are more than just songs to Roy also. My favorite is "It's over".

One of the 10 best DVDs of our collection !
Great show, everybody having fun singing or playing an instrument from K.D. Lang to Bruce Springsteen to Elvis Costello to Roy Orbison Himself ! All shows (and all DVDs) should be (and sound !) like that !

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Outstanding Live Show
This has to be the best R&R music DVD I have ever heard. Unbeatable value.... with a Bonus CD included......Great DVD transfer in B/W adds magic to the vintage Rock sound. Incredible guitar by legendary James Burton plus so many other music/greats all on stage with Roy Orbison...performing all his classic songs.
