. Brisingr: Inheritance, Book III
City Travel Guides > Books >
by: Christopher Paolini
September 20, 2008
I understand the other reviewer's complaints about the story. And I would have to agree with the point that christopher has seemed to have forgotten some of his details and has perhaps paid less attention to them than in prior books. However, i myself found the book fun to read and have no complaints about a choppy writing style. Also there are not near as many "dwarf politics" as you might expect from some other reviews. I didn't think that the book was dragging on or that there were holes in the plot. However, as soon as you start reading you know there is no way he will finish the story in three books. I suppose he could have tightened the plot some but personally i don't mind the low points between minor climax. I have not experianced ... Read More:

. The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life
City Travel Guides > Books >
by: Alice Schroeder
September 29, 2008
Alice Schroeder has done a wonderful job parsing the incredibly interesting and complex life of one of the world's true living legends.
This should become the tome to site for all things Buffett. It is thorough, examining his family history, his father's career, and details of his youthful adventures; which in some instances, went well over the moral line he now teaches people to steer away from. The hardships suffered by close family members of the financial, psychological, and personal variety are honestly portrayed through the biography, as are details of the complex relationships he has had with women throughout his life.
For students of business and investment, the book details clearly the growth of his business knowledge early ... Read More:

. The Shack
City Travel Guides > Books >
by: William P Young
July 01, 2008
The Shack, the sensational best seller by William P. Young, is a pretty gripping story. Mack's little daughter, Missy, is kidnapped and murdered while Mack is on a camping trip with his three children. The place where she was killed, a shack in the mountains, is discovered, though Missy's body and the killer are not found.
Some time later, Mack receives a letter from God, "Papa", inviting him back to "the shack." Mack goes to the shack and meets the Trinity there. God the Father is an Afro-American woman; Jesus is a blue jeans-wearing man; the Holy Spirit is an ethereal woman called Sarayu.
In unique sessions with each of the Trinity, Mack struggles with anger against his abusive father and his hatred against Missy's killer. After he forgives ... Read More:

. The Last Lecture
City Travel Guides > Books >
by: Randy Pausch
April 08, 2008
While my heart goes out to the family of Randy Pausch for their support of Randy's project and their eventual loss, The Last Lecture, really did not tell us anything new. I, too, am living with cancer and as a fellow cancer victim, it is easy to understand why Randy would want to leave a glimpse of himself to pass on to his children and instill the values he so strongly believed in. However, if one lives a compassionate, respectful, humble, loving life, and makes the best of each day as it comes, the lessons in this very short book are nothing unique that will set the world on fire. The lecture presents an important message about living an honest life, taking time to smell the roses, and the importance of following your dreams, but haven't we already heard that? Without question, Randy's ... Read More:

. Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution--And How It Can Renew America
City Travel Guides > Books >
by: Thomas L. Friedman
September 08, 2008
In Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution--and How It Can Renew America, Thomas Friedman presents an irresistible opportunity for Americans--one that can save the planet and increase our wealth.
The world is flat because of globalization--which is good, as ideas and practices can spread effectively. What is not so good is that our world population is exploding and countries like India and China are seeing an increase in wealth, which puts more strain on the world's resources and increases global warming.
Friedman begins the book with a discussion of how America has changed post 9/11. He uses the example of the US consulate built in 1882 in Istanbul. The consulate was built in the heart of the city: "it was an easy place for Turks to get a VISA, to ... Read More:
