I started out as an insecure, fumble-fingered incompetent -- couldn't even doodle. With the techniques Edwards puts forth, I've been able to learn a tremendous amount about drawing, and about looking at the world (a side-effect not to be understimated). This workbook provides a classroom experience for those who can't find or afford a classroom. For those of us with some experience, it's a great refresher course. I recommend it very highly. In fact, I'm ordering my second copy, for an insecure, fumble-fingered friend.

I have Betty Edward's previous books, such as Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain, and I loved the layout. She brought that layout/teaching style to this book.
As an artist that uses pencil,conte,charcoal etc. to draw with, I had ignored the wonderful world of paints as a medium. So this red faced artist needed to go back
and understand colour theory. In the book she is giving you hands on projects that
enable you to apply the theory within that chapter for yourself.
As I have little painting experience I found this book very useful. It will stay as part of my library of the books to never get rid of or give away. I recommend it here and will recommend it to other artists I meet. Makes a great gift for any inspiring artists. ... Read More:

Edwards seems intent on obtaining dominance in the field of "How To Draw" books written by those who cannot teach, all employing a fashionable Madison Avenue advertising approach to Drawing-On-The-Cash-In-Your-Wallet.

Well, it isn't so. One could examine infinitely the theme of an "Artist Within," a creative self within, or even a Divine Spark within. It all sounds very inspirational. The problem is, it just doesn't matter whether the artist is within/without, internal/external, left-brain/right brain, or just plain WRONG-HEADED; because it amounts to nothing more than coy marketing.

I have always considered myself to be an artist who couldn't draw. I work as a graphic and multimedia designer and I am an avid watercolourist - but to pick up a pencil and sketch would terrify me. This book sat on my shelf for years before I summoned the courage to crack it open and start to learn to draw. My motivation was to be able to draw the scenes I would experience on my summer vacation to the Maritimes....I merely wanted to be able to draw realistic buildings and figured that the human form was beyond me...well, let me tell you --I never thought it could be so simple! Now I am drawing realistic hands and objects, full of depth and realism.
