I just wanted to add to the comment I left on Fodor's Japan. This one provides plenty of information, including accomodations, in Miyazaki City. I wouldn't waste my money on Fodor's Japan. I'm looking forward to my return there in 2009.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Lonely Planet Kyoto City Guide with Map
.Lonely Planet Kyoto City Guide with Map

Where do I start? Poor maps, chaotic organization or boring writing? Or perhaps ugly, poor quality photographs (except cover which is really nice - this is the trademark feature of this honest publisher, which is only [inexpensive] as far as publishing costs are concerned, without bothering to reduce the price of the book itself).

There are countries where Lonely Planet does a very good job (in West Africa, I would be lost without them), but oh my God how they can mess up things elsewhere! Kyoto is one of them.

With so many good guides to Japan available (Eyewitness, Frommer, Fodor, even Rough Guide, for goodness sake), why bother with Lonely Planet? Well, probably because many readers feel that they have a spiritual affiliation ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Lonely Planet Philippines

Just got back Jan 2006 and found out how badly this book needed to be redone. Rumours of a book written by a former Lonely planet writer being a million times better has urged me to find that for my next trip. Don't rely on this book if you are thinking of going there without a plan. And whatever they say, never bring traveller's cheques!! I ended up getting stuck with all of my money tied up in cheques and had to call home to get money transferred. So don't bother with this book if you are going to the most beautiful place in the world!!

Initially frustrated with this guidebook's (I bought the "red kimono" edition in spring 2004) limp recommendations and surly tone, I also bought the new "Let's Go Japan" book. While more useful than the "Let's Go" book, the LP version has some very flawed contents. The directions to the top recommended ryokan / guesthouses in Hiroshima and Tokyo were poor or nonexistant. Landmarks and restaurants shown on the maps no longer existed in Ginza, Ikebukuro and Kyoto. The photos and history are nice, but in my opinion a wasteful padding. I'd much rather have a $20 book without the fluff, or at least a $27 book that's accurate. Cities change and mistakes are made, but when LP's writers place a ryokan at the top of the list (incidentally, the "best budget ... Read More:
