. Hawaii: The Big Island
by: Luci Yamamoto, Conner Gorry

whatever you do, don't substitute the Hawaii Revealed guide for this book. Lonely Planet Hawaii has everything in it. It contains no fluffy puff stuff or downer opinions. Our copy is worn from four weeks on the road and although pretty beat up, we deem it gospel. Traditionally the Lonely Planets are written by real travelers who are objective and write really well. They have no bones to pick. This is no exception.

. Lonely Planet Cuba
by: Conner Gorry, David Stanley
2004-01
I wrote the first and second editions of this book, and although the third edition has been prepared by Conner Gorry, I feel it's still the best all-round guide to Cuba. It's compact and comprehensive, although the small typeface on the maps is a problem. I suggest that you make enlarged photocopies of the maps you know you'll be using before leaving home. And if you'd like to see some of my Cuba travel photos from earlier editions of Lonely Planet Cuba, they're on www.cuba-pictures.com together with brief introductions to the regions.

. Lonely Planet Guatemala Belize & Yucatan
by: Conner Gorry
November 05, 2004
If you are familiar with the Lonley Planet series you know what this book is about, and as with the other LP guides I found it very helpful during my trip. Lots of great info for the travler who likes to explore off the beaten path and the economy minded travler. Very helpful info concerning the ruin sites. Made my hole trip great! The only sad part was my visit to Playa Del Carmen. Last time I was there was over ten years ago when it was a small village with unpaved streets, now it has grown into a small version of Cancun. Oh! one other bit of advice, check out "A Tourist in the Yucatan" fun book!

. Central & South America
by: Conner Gorry
June 01, 2000
This is Lonely Planet Lite, all of it material cribbed and repackaged from other Lonely Planet guides on the region, and in many cases the summaries grossly distort what appears in the individual country guides. It's like drinking non-alcoholic beer--so diluted that there's no satisfaction in it--and some of the original wasn't all that great to start with.

. Lonely Planet New York City
by: Conner Gorry
November 15, 2002
There are many guides to New York City. There are city guides, art guides, food guides, crime guides, New York for Dummies (which I do not like) and a number of travel guides. From what I can see there are two good general guidebooks. These are the Eyewitness Travel (DK) guide which is the one that I personally prefer or Lonely Planet (the present book). These two books are both just around 400 pages and both are tremendous efforts. They are well balanced guides with lots of photos, maps, history, etc. Both are clearly 5 star guides. I would rate both (and DK Eyewitness Travel and Lonely Planet) head and shoulders ahead of Frommers or similar books that are less well balanced. Overall, the DK guide has better photos and visuals, it is about ... Read More:
