.Lonely Planet Italy by: Damien Simonis, Alison Bing, Duncan Garwood December 28, 2007 This is the first time I've been disappointed with a Lonely Planet publication. I found this guide to Italy superficial and not helpful. It didn't contain information about some quite large towns, information about reaching destinations in scant and maps are not easy to read. .Spain by: Damien Simonis March 15, 2007 When you arrive in Barcelona at 11pm and don't have a hotel this is the ONLY travel book that will solve your fears of sleeping on the street. This wonderful edition includes beautiful, detailed colored maps of Madrid, Barcelona and many black and white maps of other cities. The maps for the Madrid and Barcelona subways can be easily torn out for easy conspicuous use around town. Separate chapters detail every aspect of Spanish life, culture and customs, including histories of the essential Franco and post Franco periods. Separate chapters detail every inch of Spanish territory, from Linea De La Concepcion to Santiago to Bilboa and of course Ibiza. Recently I sat down with my daughter who has worked at a hotel at Interlaken in Switzerland during her years in Business Administration at McGill - up to last summer - and we went over the Switzerland guides to see how they ranked, and what was currently the best guide in our humble opinions. We are not experts but have certain requirements and preferences. It helps if one can get a feel for the area in advance of a trip, and generally that is helped by good maps and color photos. So those guides do better in our review. We like to make reservations by internet and telephone and just use the Guide as a "guide".
