.Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent by: Eduardo H. Galeano 1997-01 As a REAL LATINAMERICAN that was born and has lived in Latinamerica most of his life i have to say i disagree with this book. Yes facts are facts and the USA has intervened in latin america far too many times, but we cant blame them for our problems. Look at Cuba, after the early 1960's the USA has not intervened with Cuba and Fidel has been free to run "his" country, and look at what he has done, even after he received billions in money from the former USSR. Yet, who do we blame for Cuba being such a poor country? I recommend reading "Fabricantes de Miseria" its a great and not one sided book about how everyone from wealthy bussiness families to unions and militaries have ruined latinamerica. .The House of the Spirits by: Isabel Allende July 01, 1986 This is one of two great books that I've come across recently. The other was McCrae's "The Bark of the Dogwood." While both are great, I really enjoyed "House of Spirits." As others have stated, this is a companion book really to "One Hundred Years." .Paula by: Isabel Allende 1996-04 I have to admit that the book took me awhile to love, but then I became totally involved. About the last 100 pages held my attention more than anything. This is a remarkable journey, and one that will haunt me for years to come. .Mi Pais Inventado: Un Paseo Nostalgico Por Chile by: Isabel Allende January 22, 2004 Excelent book. Great spanish. It remainded me of my homeland. This was the first time time I've read great spanish (Garcia Marquez excluded) from a writer who lives in USA. I gave Ms Allende's books to all my gringo nephews and nieces for Christmas.They fell so ashamed of their patois spanish. I'm happy to hear they want more books in "castellano". I highly recomend this book to all those who call themselves "spanish" teachers. .Portrait in Sepia by: Isabel Allende 2002-11 The story of Aurora and her ancestors is a great one. Isabel Allende divides the story between USA and South America, and there are great characters all the way through the book. Specially the female characters are strong, and it soon becomes clear, that Paulina del Valle in some ways is the true herion of this story.
