. Out of Africa
by: Isak Dinesen
September 05, 1992
I consider Out of Africa to be the best-written portrayal of Africa by a foreign writer. She did a great job in her portrayal, indicating that she was well versed not only with the land, but also with the native African peoples she met and knew as well as their way of life. The fact that Karen respected that way of life made her to have a deep understanding of their customs and lives at a time of colonialism where European settlers lived an exclusive life from the natives and only dealt with them as sources of cheap labor. I could not help recalling other titles set in the colonial era such as DISCIPLES OF FORTUNE and NOWHERE IN AFRICA. However, Karen towered above the others in her unique style of recounting her stories.

. Modern Classics Out Of Africa And Shadows On The Grass
by: Isak Dinesen
December 03, 1985
Writing under the pen name of Isak Dinessen, "Out of Africa", published in 1937, was written by Karen Blixen who lived in Kenya from 1914 to 1931. She was from Denmark and had come to Kenya to marry her Swedish cousin, but even though the marriage didn't work out, she stayed on their 4,000 acre coffee farm. In loving detail she describes her way of life, including some extensive descriptions of incidents involving her native servants. Through it all her love for the people and for Africa shines though. The reader lives her adventures with her and shares her regrets when the farm fails and she has return to Europe. "Shadows on the Grass", published in 1960 is a much shorter work and describes her relationships with some ... Read More:

. Letters from Africa, 1914-1931
by: Isak Dinesen
December 31, 1981
In her own words Isak Dinesen gives you a peak into life on her beloved farm. Her impressions of her new world, her hopes, triumphs and failures. Kinanjui, Farah, Kamante, Denys, Delamere characters that one came to love in her tales from "Out of Africa" are all in these letters. It was also fascinating to see from reading the letters how her writing style evolved. A style that would later mature into the legacy of work she would leave behind. A must for any collecter of this amazing woman.

. Seven Gothic Tales
by: Isak Dinesen
December 03, 1991
This is a demanding work of seven multilayered and esoteric stories in this, Dinesen's first book. We know of Dinesen more commonly by way of Meryl Streep, who played Dinesen, or the Baroness Karen Blixen, in "Out of Africa." But the woman we find here as the author of these stories is no easily-understood, Hollywood character. Her stories within stories are rich in symbolism, imagination, and a "long ago and far away" feeling that is carefully, carefully, controlled by the author. Dinesen wrote some of these tales in Africa, and finished others along with ordering the book back home in Denmark, after her farm had failed. She wrote, interestingly, in English (and did her own translations back into Danish later on). ... Read More:
