. Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster
by: Jon Krakauer
October 19, 1999
I discovered this book after I read "Into the Wild", and quickly became a huge fan of Jon Krakauer. I am almost done reading "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev, another climber from the 1996 Everest tragedy, and much prefer Jon Krakauers book. Jon is very descriptive in "Into Thin Air", making constant sidenotes to explain mountaineering techniques and other information that readers may not understand. He is very thorough and honest when describing the events before, during, and after the Everest event...making the reader truly be able to picture themselves there. The book has photos as well...so we know what some of the climbers and guides look like...as where crucial events happened on the mountain. "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev seems to ... Read More:

. Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith
by: Jon Krakauer
June 08, 2004
Having read Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" I was pleased to find another book by him.
"Under The Banner Of Heaven" is a window into how men will use God as their "Commander" or "Ally" in committing heinous crimes, when in fact He had no hand in it. In fact this book brought some of the memories of the books on Jim Jones and his "People's Temple"....adultery, murder, mayhem and secrecy, an armed camp.
Jon is a superb writer, and I learned a lot from this book, and have recommended it to others.
Jon had no grudges when he wrote this book. He was simply straight forward and informative.
I'm looking forward to reading "Into The Wild".

. Iceland: Land of the Sagas
by: Jon Krakauer, David Roberts
October 06, 1998
I am glad I got this book just for the text, which is excellent. But I'm surprised at rave reviews for the photos, which to me are absurd. They hardly explore Iceland's unique topography and instead turn it into a generic rugged Anywhere. Notice that in almost every photo there's some sign of habitation: a building, an animal,a person in a boat, etc. The thing that distinguishes Iceland is that there's NO ONE there. You can drive for hours, as I have along the coast on a road that's simply a leveling of the gravel, without seeing another car, building or even a road sign. It's creepy and exhilerating. It's the ideal place to be alone. The landscape is so unusual it reminds you of nothing familiar, nothing from your past. And except for rocky outcroppings, it's flat in ... Read More:

. Eiger Dreams: Ventures Among Men and Mountains
by: Jon Krakauer
May 19, 1997
People have always pushed to accomplish more. When one of my best friends took up mountain climbing well into his fifties after he back wasn't up to golf any more, I began to wonder what the sport was all about. Having remembered that Jon Krakauer is both a wonderful writer and an adventuresome climber, it seemed like I might learn the answers by reading this book. I was more than amply rewarded for my curiosity.
Knowing that adventures are better heard as a story rather than read, I also opted for Philip Franklin's reading for Books on Tape. This was a stunningly good choice. Mr. Franklin makes you feel like you are right there as you look down from dizzying heights of thousands of feet while being held up by a small patch of crumbling ice.

. Notes from The Century Before: A Journal from British Columbia
by: Edward Hoagland
February 12, 2002
Two things brought my attention to this book. 1) Edward Hoagland's introductions in well known works of Thoreau and Muir, and 2) my interest in the beautiful expanse of wildness that is British Columbia. The book might be described as "quirky," and I have to wonder whether it was an influence in the creation of the early nineties television series "Northern Exposure" (one of the few TV programs I have ever cared for). Published in 1969, it is the account of a New York* novelist become journalist in the great, wild watersheds of the Stikine and Skeena River systems, waters coursing from the Cassiar Mountains, "from sources known only from aerial photographs, some of them where nobody alive had ever been." *By the time the footloose essayist Hoagland recorder these images in the summer of ...
