.Seductions of Rice: A Cookbook by: Jeffrey Alford, Naomi Duguid May 27, 2003 I have made over 50% of the recipies in this book. No other cookbook has given me this many "staples"! The recipes produce delicious results with some tastes outside of "standard" North American fare that are easy to fall in love with, are straightforward to cook, are well explained, and "from scratch" hence they produce tastes one does not tire of. Some recipes require some planning but none take long to cook or unfamiliar gadgets/techniques (ie. you need left over rice, or marinate chicken a few hours before). They create food I don't feel guilty eating (it's not oil-laden or processed). Some require a few more exotic ingredients, but these can be found in major grocery stores. .Mangoes and Curry Leaves: Culinary Travels Through the Great Subcontinent by: Jeffrey Alford, Naomi Duguid November 15, 2005 Mangoes and Curry Leaves is a beautiful combination of history, travelogue, culture and recipes. The first chapter alone, on chutneys and samobols, opened my eyes to this oft-overlooked area of Indian cuisine (or cuisine of the Subcontinent, as the authors describe it). The mark of a great food book is that it makes you want to run to the kitchen and try some of the recipes right away. This book succeeds. I can't wait to try so many of these recipes. .HomeBaking: The Artful Mix of Flour and Tradition Around the World by: Jeffrey Alford, Naomi Duguid October 29, 2003 'Homebaking', by Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid, might be a worthwhile find at the library for people of a certain taste, but I would not recommend buying it. A large part of this weighty tome is given over to bland travel anecdotes and pictures only faintly related to the subject matter, in what appears to be either an attempt to combine non-linear (and rather non-eventful) travelogue with cook book or else a rather desperate effort to evoke those feelings of authenticity so widely craved today. While the home baker may find new ideas in this wide-ranging collection, he or she may also find frustration in actually attempting to follow these directions. .Flatbreads & Flavors: A Baker's Atlas by: Jeffrey Alford, Naomi Duguid August 18, 2008 This book has many exotic recipes from the authors' travels in Asia, Arabia, Africa and the Americas. When I lived in Africa, I fell in love with chapatis and mandazi, but I always considered them too hard to make myself. Same for pita bread, which I eat every day. I'm not an expert bread maker, but I just made the Baladi Breads (Middle Eastern whole wheat pitas) from this book. They came out exceptionally soft and delicious on my first try. Some didn't puff up completely, but as the authors suggest, practice makes perfect. I had so much dough left over after making 8 pitas that I decided to make pizzas with whole wheat crust. They came out delicious, too! I can't wait to try some of the obscure dishes from far reaches of the globe like Armenia and Hunza.
