.Rising Sun and Tumbling Bear: Russia's War with Japan by: Richard Connaughton June 12, 2003 This is an excellent narrative account of the Russo-Japanese war which does well as a reader's first look at the conflict. However it a little confusing when referring to the little picture. For example insufficient maps are provided for the naval engagements which were of high priority in this war. Don't go in expecting to get a good picture of every battle, in the end you get a rough idea of what happened and not much else. .Macarthur And Defeat In The Philippines by: Richard Connaughton August 09, 2001 I found this work on McArthur the best objective opinion of this military "icon" written to date. It was appropriate and necessary for such a work to be written by an academic historian who was not an American in order to obtain an objective view of such a controversial man in American history. I would like to see the author write a similar analysis of McArthur's generalship in the Korean conflict.
