. Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution--And How It Can Renew America
City Travel Guides > Books > Nonfiction
by: Thomas L. Friedman
September 08, 2008
In Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution--and How It Can Renew America, Thomas Friedman presents an irresistible opportunity for Americans--one that can save the planet and increase our wealth.
The world is flat because of globalization--which is good, as ideas and practices can spread effectively. What is not so good is that our world population is exploding and countries like India and China are seeing an increase in wealth, which puts more strain on the world's resources and increases global warming.
Friedman begins the book with a discussion of how America has changed post 9/11. He uses the example of the US consulate built in 1882 in Istanbul. The consulate was built in the heart of the ... Read More:

. The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism
City Travel Guides > Books > Nonfiction
by: Naomi Klein
July 29, 2008
I've enjoyed Naomi Klein's writing ever since No Logo, but I must admit that I find that she can be hit and miss. In this book, she scores a straight-out hit. What I enjoy so thoroughly is that she manages to do so with a fascinating thesis: comparing the effects of electric shock on the human mind and body with the effects of disasters upon the collective social psyche, and how the unscrupulous attempt to use this vulnerability to their advantage. Indeed, in some cases, as Klein points out, the people doing the electroshocking are the same people trying to massively alter economic structures.
Reading this book has its own shock value; the section on how tsunami relief money was used to force the victimized fishing villagers out ... Read More:

. The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
City Travel Guides > Books > Nonfiction
by: Michael Pollan
August 28, 2007
This book could be broken down into three parts. The first few chapters document the shocking state of our current agricultural industry and in particular the ecological costs of our massive overproduction of corn and the consequences it is having on the beef we eat. The middle portion is a first hand description of one farm in particular that has bucked the trend and still remained viable. This is then expanded into a more comprehensive look at the organic food industry and how it is evolving. Finally the author takes us on his own personal journey as he attempts to become a hunter/gatherer and ultimately prepare a meal in keeping with the philosophy set forth by the slow food movement.
The author is a journalist who I feel really attempts to look at ... Read More:

. The Art of War
City Travel Guides > Books > Nonfiction
by: Sun Tzu
November 13, 2002
Even though this book was written over 2000 years ago, many of these tactics (many of whom I find are common sense) still apply today.
Unfortunately, I found the book was at times confusing to read and wondered a bit. This is really written like an instructional book, something I did not expect and most likely the reason why I didn't like the reading. This is a good book to read but paying $7.50 for it (I paid $3) is not worth it and you could find other books out there that contain much more information.

. The War Within: A Secret White House History 2006-2008
City Travel Guides > Books > Nonfiction
by: Bob Woodward
September 08, 2008
Unless this is your introduction to Bob Woodward's four books about how we got into Iraq and why it didn't turn out so well, you won't be surprised to learn that President George W. Bush knows of no price too high for the United States to pay in order to make him look good in his decision to invade Iraq in 2003. His approach to improving matters in Iraq is to wait for someone to propose spending more money and more lives, and then jump on the suggestion. Meanwhile, he and his true believers revel in the thought he will be ultimately considered as being another Abraham Lincoln for bringing democracy to the Middle East. That's the long and short of this book.
Most of the over 400 pages dwell on good-faith attempts to find ways to respond to the ... Read More:
