. The Shack
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: William P Young
July 01, 2008
The Shack, the sensational best seller by William P. Young, is a pretty gripping story. Mack's little daughter, Missy, is kidnapped and murdered while Mack is on a camping trip with his three children. The place where she was killed, a shack in the mountains, is discovered, though Missy's body and the killer are not found.
Some time later, Mack receives a letter from God, "Papa", inviting him back to "the shack." Mack goes to the shack and meets the Trinity there. God the Father is an Afro-American woman; Jesus is a blue jeans-wearing man; the Holy Spirit is an ethereal woman called Sarayu.
In unique sessions with each of the Trinity, Mack struggles with anger against his abusive father and his hatred against Missy's ... Read More:

. Watchmen
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons
April 01, 1995
Fans of graphic novels have been crying out for the genre to be taken as legitimately literary for quite some time. Some of these works really should be taken seriously - Neil Gaiman's Sandman series, for example - and some really are nothing more than glorified comic books. As with any genre, there are diamonds and lumps of coal - and Watchmen is the diamond. If you only read one graphic novel, it should be this one.
Plot summaries and spoilers abound; suffice to say that this book involves superheroes, conspiracies, relationshps, insights, metaphysical questions, and so, so very many levels of meaning. Don't let the superheroes put you off: this is as mature and real a treatment of these preadolescent phenomena as you will ever find. ... Read More:

. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: David Wroblewski
June 10, 2008
From the moment I read the Publisher's Weekly starred review in June on The Story of Edgar Sawtelle: A Novel by David Wroblewski, I knew I had to read the book. It did take some time, but it was worth every moment. (I'll admit that I read some non-fiction in between--if for no other reason than to make the novel last longer!)
If you love animals--especially dogs--and believe in their power of communication and their ability to love, this book is a must read. I was entranced from the start, as The Sawtelle's raise a fictional breed of dog, known to be exceptional at understanding humans.
The hero, Edgar,a mute, bonds with his favorite dog, Almondine. How they communicated with such intensity and depth was deeply moving.
