. The Last Lecture
City Travel Guides > Books > Entertainment
by: Randy Pausch
April 08, 2008
While my heart goes out to the family of Randy Pausch for their support of Randy's project and their eventual loss, The Last Lecture, really did not tell us anything new. I, too, am living with cancer and as a fellow cancer victim, it is easy to understand why Randy would want to leave a glimpse of himself to pass on to his children and instill the values he so strongly believed in. However, if one lives a compassionate, respectful, humble, loving life, and makes the best of each day as it comes, the lessons in this very short book are nothing unique that will set the world on fire. The lecture presents an important message about living an honest life, taking time to smell the roses, and the importance of following your dreams, but haven't ... Read More:

. Eat Pray Love
City Travel Guides > Books > Entertainment
by: Elizabeth Gilbert
January 30, 2007
I am APPALLED by the fact that this book made it to the New York Times bestseller list and, apparently, will be made into a movie with....Julia Roberts (is this true?)
What does this tell us about North American culture and values??? Why should such a shallow piece of work written by such a self-absorbed narcissistic writer receive such fame and accolades? I am truly mystified. This book was all about HERSELF. Poor little me who received an ENORMOUS advance to write this book before she even left the States. Who whined and felt sorry for herself while in Italy, can you imagine??? She had no interest in visiting the fabulous museums, art galleries, churches, etc. but rather spend hundreds of Euros buying lingerie and eating amazing meals ... Read More:

. Audition: A Memoir
City Travel Guides > Books > Entertainment
by: Barbara Walters
May 06, 2008
This is a great read! I feel like I have known so many people better after I've finished reading it. Barbara Walters' writing made me feel I was reading a book written by someone I know instead of a media icon. What a life! How can one woman who has a young daughter have travelled that much, met so many heads of state including dictators, dated so many prominent men,and had such a colourful career. I think it's important that Barbara recorded the sexism she has faced in her career that spanned five decades. It's interesting to know the men who had given her a hard time had either been let go or died of cancer. It made me wonder which is the cause, and which is the effect. Regretably, today sexism remains alive everywhere. To keep it brief, I just want to say "Barbara, ... Read More:

. The Glass Castle: A Memoir
City Travel Guides > Books > Entertainment
by: Jeannette Walls
January 09, 2006
I was astounded while reading this book that the reviews were so good. I found it rang false, not because I thought she was lying or exaggerating, but because there was something missing. Accepting one's upbringing as dysfunctional and coming to terms with it is healthy. But this didn't feel healthy to me. It seemed almost romanticized, like her life was a character-building lark. Somebody's in denial: perhaps it's me, since I'm so entirely outnumbered.

. The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
City Travel Guides > Books > Entertainment
by: Michael Pollan
August 28, 2007
This book could be broken down into three parts. The first few chapters document the shocking state of our current agricultural industry and in particular the ecological costs of our massive overproduction of corn and the consequences it is having on the beef we eat. The middle portion is a first hand description of one farm in particular that has bucked the trend and still remained viable. This is then expanded into a more comprehensive look at the organic food industry and how it is evolving. Finally the author takes us on his own personal journey as he attempts to become a hunter/gatherer and ultimately prepare a meal in keeping with the philosophy set forth by the slow food movement.
The author is a journalist who I feel really attempts to look at both sides of the issues ... Read More:

. Power Hold'em Strategy
City Travel Guides > Books > Entertainment
by: Daniel Negreanu
June 17, 2008
Would not recommend this to anyone. Don't get me wrong. Daniel has some useful advice if you like to play a loose smallball style but much of the rest of the book is just garbage filler from people you would expect would have more to discuss. Even Erik Lindgren's section is extremely boring. Evelyn Ng should not have been included in this. Maybe a little conflict of interest going on there Daniel?
Not much math is discussed at all so if you like to learn that stuff you'd be much better off buying 'No-Limit Hold'em Theory and Practice' which is easily the best book I've ever read.
