. The Last Lecture
City Travel Guides > Books > Health- Mind and Body
by: Randy Pausch
April 08, 2008
While my heart goes out to the family of Randy Pausch for their support of Randy's project and their eventual loss, The Last Lecture, really did not tell us anything new. I, too, am living with cancer and as a fellow cancer victim, it is easy to understand why Randy would want to leave a glimpse of himself to pass on to his children and instill the values he so strongly believed in. However, if one lives a compassionate, respectful, humble, loving life, and makes the best of each day as it comes, the lessons in this very short book are nothing unique that will set the world on fire. The lecture presents an important message about living an honest life, taking time to smell the roses, and the importance of following your dreams, but haven't we already ... Read More:

. Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food
City Travel Guides > Books > Health- Mind and Body
by: Jessica Seinfeld
September 20, 2007
This book was very disappointing. I LOVE to cook, and found the recipes were very labour intensive (all that puree-ing, even for someone who loves to be in the kitchen...give me a break!). The foods I prepared were ixnayed by my kids, and my husband who eats almost anything wasn't so impressed either. I wish I could return it, but I've thrown out my receipt. Anyway, what I've learned from this is that yes, we all want our families to eat healthier foods. How do we accomplish this? Set the example by eating it ourselves, keep serving it to them (not hiding it, just making it really yummy!), and eventually they will follow suit. And if they grow up and hate broccoli? No problem, as long as they eat their carrots : )

. In Defense Of Food
City Travel Guides > Books > Health- Mind and Body
by: Michael Pollan
January 01, 2008
From bestselling author Michael Pollan comes "In Defense of Food", the highly anticipated followup to his previous masterpiece, "Omnivore's Dilemma".
Unlike "Omnivore's Dilemma" which was more of an exploration of the food that is on the typical North American dinner table. "In Defense of Food" is more of a prescription for healthy eating, and a natural follow-up to Pollan's excellent investigative work in "Omnivore's Dillemma".
Essentially, Pollan's argument is that we should eat less and eat mostly fresh vegetables bought at the farmer's market. Nothing fascinating there, but Pollan goes into depth to prove why the current North American diet is the absolutely worst diet humankind could have ever come up with.
Overall, I think ... Read More:

. The Brain That Changes Itself
City Travel Guides > Books > Health- Mind and Body
by: Norman Doidge
December 18, 2007
The history of Sigmund Freud's approach to the mechanisms of the mind has exhibited some tumultuous changes over the past century. Norman Doidge reminds us that Freud developed a thesis about the mind's plasticity over time. Freud's psychotherapy - irrespective of some questionable methods - was designed to allow the mind to search within itself and change outward behaviour by identifying memories hidden or repressed. However, after Freud, researchers using diagnoses of stroke or brain-injury victims, "mapped" areas in the brain for function. The first of these was the speech-producing region now named Broca's Area, after Paul Broca, its discoverer in the mid-19th century. Brain modularity, or "localization" as Doidge deems it, became the norm in brain research for decades following ... Read More:

. The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
City Travel Guides > Books > Health- Mind and Body
by: Michael Pollan
August 28, 2007
This book could be broken down into three parts. The first few chapters document the shocking state of our current agricultural industry and in particular the ecological costs of our massive overproduction of corn and the consequences it is having on the beef we eat. The middle portion is a first hand description of one farm in particular that has bucked the trend and still remained viable. This is then expanded into a more comprehensive look at the organic food industry and how it is evolving. Finally the author takes us on his own personal journey as he attempts to become a hunter/gatherer and ultimately prepare a meal in keeping with the philosophy set forth by the slow food movement.
The author is a journalist who I feel really attempts to look at both sides of the issues and ... Read More:

. My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey
City Travel Guides > Books > Health- Mind and Body
by: Jill Bolte Taylor
May 13, 2008
Like many of these books you have to realize this isn't for everyone and it will not work for most. On the other hand there are many handy ideas on offloading work you shouldn't be doing anyway.
I know of other people who use elance.com for some of their copywriting and internet projects and the thought of having a personal assistant from India also sounds appealing. Since I am self employed this seems much more plausible than for an office worker to offload their work overseas and start taking more time out of the office.
I would recommend this for anyone self employed, looking to start their own business, or tired of their current grind. It will open your eyes to some opportunities, although I don't see it as the utltimate solution for everyone.

. Sickened: The True Story of a Lost Childhood
City Travel Guides > Books > Health- Mind and Body
by: Julie Gregory
September 28, 2004
I didn't find this book to be that captivating. It was an ok story from a survivor of child abuse. However, it lacked a true insight and narrative quality that should go along with memoirs. I found the extra medical inserts to add credibility but that was it. It seemed like Julie really was yearning to prove something in this book, but it fell short of an insightful and good tale. I think what brought me to the end was to see how Julie coped once she figured out there was a psychiatric disease she could label her mother with, but otherwise I found myself rather disconnected with the protagonist of the story.
