I first became interested in this book through the television show, but what an absolute gem to find: funny, in-depth and provides a close look at the human element behind police work that isn't often exlored in today's journalism. Five out of five, definitely one of my top books of all time.

I consider Out of Africa to be the best-written portrayal of Africa by a foreign writer. She did a great job in her portrayal, indicating that she was well versed not only with the land, but also with the native African peoples she met and knew as well as their way of life. The fact that Karen respected that way of life made her to have a deep understanding of their customs and lives at a time of colonialism where European settlers lived an exclusive life from the natives and only dealt with them as sources of cheap labor. I could not help recalling other titles set in the colonial era such as DISCIPLES OF FORTUNE and NOWHERE IN AFRICA. However, Karen towered above the others in her unique style of recounting her stories.

This book teaches the Basics of Swahili grammer and gives a person tons of words and phrases. One could learn some basic Swahili phrases from this and even think in Swahili numbers, but besides that, it is mostly a tourist manual, and unless you plan on being in rural East Africa, and are very polite, do you need to really know tourist Swahili if a large majority of the people will already have the ability to understand you in English?

Thank goodness I read this book before going to Egypt. I feel it really kept me from being ripped off left and right while I was in Egypt. I can't imagine anyone going there without knowing all the good tips contained in this book. The book though should make a bigger point about how to go about negotiating prices and what to really watch out for. For example, there are seemingly nice people who will approach you in markets or near tourist sites asking to show you around. BE CAREFUL! These people are most likely out to swindle you. I ran into one guy who wanted to show me papyrus at Said's Delta Papyrus Center. I bought this book for my son even if he is just 1 1/2 years old because i was afraid to forget to buy it when the proper time came for him to explore it...little did i know, i was looking through it and getting fascinated with the beauty of this book on my own.
The book claims to be the journal of a great archeologist found by the grandchild. it's very well made for all those little explorers because it's filled with stuff to feel, read, flip open, un-tie, open and discover. The pictures are very well made and give great details about Egypt and all the great pyramids in a fun and entertaining way.

Although I cannot deny the author is brave and adventurous, it is irritating to note that his facts are frequently mistaken, his romanticism cloying and his understanding of politics is oversimplified. He is obviously a skilled pilot and I recommend the book for other flying enthusiasts.

Don't expect much from this. This is really more a waste of time than anything else. If you're travelling to Ethiopia, and you speak english, then you really don't have to worry. Many Ethiopians speak english, and many of the signs are in english/amharic.

What use is it to learn how to count, or say hi, when you'll need to speak english to communicate anyhow?
