. The Village of Waiting
City Travel Guides > Books > Coastal West Africa
by: George Packer
August 01, 2001
This beautifully written book that is set in Togo is an emotional account of a peace corps volunteer's experiences. Despite the reality of the place, the author found himself attached tothe soul of the people. He saw Togo from the angle of a lover of Africa. The writer is very descriptive and made it possible for the reader to relate to the story. This is the right book for those who have the desire to know about African life and the culture of the people. Coming from an outsider's view of an African country, one gets amazed by the insightful nature of it. You can also read The Usurper and Other Stories, Things Fall Apart, Disciples of Fortune,Triple Agent Double Cross, and Mango Elephants in the Sun.

Not exactly LP, but it tells stories of two places that been extremely dangerous and one that still is.in SL conflict(the hunter) was fuelled by greed, diamonds made many Lebanese come to SL and the become rich on trading, MEA (middle east airlines) flew in several of their big passenger planes to rescue it's citizens, SL isn't a tourist resort nowadays like The Gambia today, but still not extremely dangerous. Bougainville (the Heaven) was Oz mining company property until the fighting drove them of the island, PNG gov tried to recruit SA mercs to "conquer" the island and start mining again, but it failed badly. Chechenya (the Hammer) was also about greed, in this case oil-pipelines from Azerbadjian. ... Read More:

. Gabon, Sao Tome & Principe: The Bradt Travel Guide
City Travel Guides > Books > Coastal West Africa
by: Sophie Warne
November 01, 2003
I reside in Libreville, Gabon and have not, until now, been able to find much literature about this place in English ... or French for that matter. Then this little gem was published! I take this little book with me everywhere I go, I make a point of consulting it before I plan a trip, ... where to eat in Cocobeach, where to stay in Nyonie, where to shop in Libreville ... it's all in there. I found a couple of phone numbers misprinted, but aside from that, the information on each of the places I have been to is up to date, useful and correct. This book tells it like it is, the good, the bad and the ugly! I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of visiting or living in Gabon.
