I picked up this book hoping to find some deeper insight into Ethiopia, Sudan and Somalia of the 1980's. Though I did come away with a slightly better understanding of Ethiopia, the coverage of Sudan and Somalia was non-existent except where it impacted on Ethiopia.

This book is so heavily biased in favour of the US that it began to give the feel of being pro-US propaganda. Kaplan talks in great detail of how the actions of the US in Ethiopia counteracted the actions of the USSR which he claims made the situation worse. Using this example he then moves further to say that US policy in Africa at that time was more humane than USSR.

I spent several years living with my family in Asmara as a young boy. Now as an adult I've been searching for a book that would allow my to do some arm chair traveling back to my former home. Mr. Denison's book allowed me to do that in both word and picture. The book is broken up into a general history section followed by detailed photos on the major architecture of Asmara in each of the significant eras, and offers both vintage and current photographs and design plans of the buildings in the city.

Compared to the other Red Sea dive guides I've been able to find, this one is the best by far. The photos are fantastic and the maps are very readable - and the text gives an excellent overview of the dive site conditions and highlights. The descriptions seem balanced and informative, and if the site isn't the greatest, it says so ("hard corals are not a strong point here..." and for a wreck dive - the Salem Express "...take a look, spare a thought for the victimes and then head to the nearby reefs."). Based on my 5 dive trips in the RS, it looks very accurate as well.
