. Uganda, 5th: The Bradt Travel Guide
City Travel Guides > Books > Rwanda and Uganda
by: Philip Briggs
April 01, 2007
Philip Briggs has produced a masterpiece with his 4th edition of 'Uganda: the Bradt Travel Guide'. As a specialist tour operator who has visited Uganda before, I am familiar with other Uganda guidebooks and Bradt's latest edition is without a doubt, the best around. Everything the prospective visitor needs to know about Uganda is contained in this superb book. Briggs has done an exceptionally thorough job of updating the guide and I am confident that it will enable readers not only to see the best of the country, but also to understand it.

Janice Booth's Rwanda guide not only is the most updated travel guidebook on Rwanda, but it also goes culturally/historically where the other guidebooks do not go. I spent several weeks in Rwanda in 2003, finding almost all the information in other guidebooks almost completely useless or irrelevant. Due to the genocide, and subsequent arrival of international aid, the entire infrastructure of the country, especially Kigali, had changed, and so the nuts and bolts information of hotels, transport, and other practicalities found in the Bradt guide were of great use. The personal relationship of the author with Rwandans made it easier for a post-war visitor to understand what the average Rwandan had been through, and the section on "giving ... Read More:

. Land Of A Thousand Hills
City Travel Guides > Books > Rwanda and Uganda
by: Rosamond Carr
September 07, 2000
A friend of main became an Episcopal missionary in Uganda several years ago. While the book is not about Uganda, nevertheless it gives me a view of what life is like inside the African nation of Rwanda by Ms. Carr. I thought the book was excellent, and is very hard to put down. From several environments, depending on which government, and also genocides, makes living in Africa a challenge. Thank you, Rosamond, for telling me about life inside Africa. A true heroine, and worthy of Sainthood.

. 20th Century North Of South
City Travel Guides > Books > Rwanda and Uganda
by: Shiva Naipaul
January 01, 1997
I'm trying very hard to figure out how I can review this book without coming across as an ignorant, bubble-headed liberal or a rabid racist. Hmmm... I don't think it's going to happen. North of South, by the late Shiva Naipaul, is essentially a travelogue of a trip to parts of Africa in the 1970's, specifically Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia. Welded to the descriptions of people and scenery are sharp observations on class, racism, government and colonialism. Naipaul's eye misses nothing during his travel, and his anecdotes are both humorous and sad. It was interesting to see that this guy is the brother of V.S. Naipaul, who recently won a Nobel Prize for Literature. Anyway, this book is not going to be found on the syllabus of any black studies classes anytime soon. Read More:
