I bought this book almost by accident as I was wandering around the airport waiting to depart for China. What a find! I found I abandoned my larger English/Chinese dictionary and used this book almost exclusively. It was easy to carry with me at all times. Many Chinese seemed quite facinated by it as well. I believe that it allowed me to learn enough Chinese that I am now hooked. Highly recommended.

Addendum: I have since found that "The Rough Guide Phrasebook" provides both pinyn and a simplified English transliteration. The English tranliteration is very helpful. I found that with pinyin alone, I had to have every word pronounced by a Chinese speaker. This other guide, at least, gives some guide to pronounciation. Rough Guide ... Read More:

A good guide, which gives needed info to get around. For business travelers, this book should go with another book by a Chinese journalist George Zhibin Gu, China's Global Reach: Markets, Multinationals, and Globalization, which offers indepth analysis on current Chinese business and political affairs.

I am not surprised that there are over one hundred reviews of River Town. It is a superb book. If I could I would give it ten stars. The best book I have read in years.

Much is written by others about this book. It is a piece of narrative non-fiction. As such it reads like a novel. A real page turner!

My wife is Chinese. I have spent some time in China. But at a different place (Guangxi province) and time (ten years later). I certainly share Mr. Hessing's attitude towards the hospitality and friendliness of the Chinese people. As he mentions: it is hard to imagine that very many Americans (or Canadians) would invite an odd foreigner into their home after meeting him on the street for the first time. My copy of this title has the Chinese in large, useful characters right next to the maps. Only if there's no map for a small town is the Chinese listed in the back, with the information for each town handily grouped together in alphabetical order.

And like every other guide book, the map for a town is in the middle of the text talking about that town. So what's hard to find? The hotels and places to see are right next to the map in most cases. And since the towns only have one map, what's to guess about which maps things are on?

I don't know about the Beijing and Shanghai guides, but of course there will be a lot of repeated information. The sights don't change, after all. The best place to eat is the same. Bus 47 still runs the same route. Of ... Read More:
