City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Lost in Mongolia: Rafting the World's Last Unchallenged River
.Lost in Mongolia: Rafting the World's Last Unchallenged River
City Travel Guides > Books > Mongolia
by: Colin Angus

September 09, 2003
I received this book on Christmas day and, much to the dismay of the rellies, I finished it on the same day. As the miserable weather outside lashed at the windows and my Aunt Jennifer babbled about napkin handling etiquette, I was far removed to another world; a land of gushing rivers, Russian mafia, indigenous people, and non-stop action. "Lost in Mongolia" is a true modern-day adventure and Angus vividly details the trials and tribulations that he and his team encounter as they attempt to become the first to fully navigate the length of the world's fifth longest river. It is obvious that the quest to be "first" comes secondary to the team's desire to simply get out and explore the most remote regions of our planet from ... Read More:

I agree with quite a few of the comments of other reviewers. The LP Mongolia is rather shoddy and sketchy and could definitely be much better.

But is there an alternative ? None of us would have dared to venture outside UB (tourist-speak for Ulaan Baatar) without LP Mongolia. Therein lies its indispensibility !!!

I found the writer, Crane, dying to interpose his bad poetry, bad jokes and whining, obnoxious self into what could have been a thoughtful story about a monk and his religious beliefs. Too bad!

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Where the Pavement Ends: One Woman's Bicycle Trip Through Mongolia, China & Vietnam

City Travel Guides > Books > Mongolia
by: Erika Warmbrunn

I enjoyed this book and oftentimes found the narrative absorbing. I was astonished by the contrasts particularly between Mongolia, with its frigid weather, expansive plains and childlike adults, and Vietnam, with its tropical beaches and aggressive, war-weary toddlers! Attention to detail really enlivened the book. I particularly liked the linguistic asides and descriptions of different foods. I always looked forward to the pictures, although I sorely missed a photo of Beijing. The chapter about the author's trip over a dangerous Chinese mountain on her way to Xiangning was loaded with suspense! But then there was no resolution. After her harrowing experience, we needed to see her actually arrive in Xiangning.

The book needed an ... Read More:

Lonely Planet always publishes great phrasebooks, and this one's no different. Luckily, they provide the original cyrillic script alongside of the phonetic transcriptions, so you can actually read things while inside the country (unlike their Central Asian phrasebook, which was entirely in phonetic transcription). I haven't been to Mongolia yet, but this book is definatly coming with me when I go! Its content is very similar to their Russian phrasebook, which I found extremely useful while in Russia.

Author Louisa Waugh moved to a remote village in Mongolia after two years working in the country's capitol: HEARING BIRDS FLY is the first-person account of the year she spent living with the villagers. From the hardships of a dark Mongolian winter into a lush summer and nomadic existence, Waugh's story captures all the ups and downs of a rugged, isolated lifestyle.

What makes this book so interesting is that it doesn't fall into the cliched sterotypes of Mongolia most loved by foreignors. Mongolia in the 1990s underwent dramatic and painful social, political and economic changes. Those changes have ebbed from the collapse of the country's economy in the early 1990s (and the initial abandonment of the cities for the nomadic way of life), to the later collapse of the rural economy and the drift back towards the capital city, Ulaanbaatar. To make the claim that the capital doesn't reflect the 'real Mongolia' is not only arrogant, it is wrong. It is like saying Beijing doesn't relfect the 'real China'.

The fact remains that the majority of the country's population lives in the capital. People have moved to ... Read More:

2008-06
I have a copy of the 1921 Blue Ribbon edition (probably an undated popular reprinting), and will not contribute to the debate on the quality of the paperback edition (see the two earlier reviews). I do think it is important to point out that the book belongs to the early twentieth century, and reflects its values. Readers should be prepared to make allowances for this, or not bother. Of course, those who pass it by will be missing some first-class storytelling.

Andrews, who first came to the attention of scientists as a skilled taxidermist, shows his enthusiasm for turning live animals into specimens for mounting. Despite praise of individual Asian acquaintances, he falls into ethnic stereotypes whenever he deals with nations or groups for any length ... Read More:
