If you are visiting Cuba in the near future, BUY THIS BOOK. If you think you might tour Cuba,BUY THIS BOOK. If you don't plan to visit Cuba but enjoy reading travel narratives by those who have traveled to exotic places, BUY THIS BOOK. I have just returned from a two week bicycle trip with two friends and can report from experience that Bicycling Cuba is spot-on about everything. The Smiths have many years experience leading bike tours for a large bicycle touring company, so their guide book and route directions are presented as cyclists need and use them. I've got a bone to pick with Joan Didion, but first let me say that "Miami" is a simply brilliant piece of noir journalism that, in every paragraph, reflects a different aspect of "the Capital of Latin America." Odd that 1987 saw three major non-fiction Miami treatments, all differently motivated: David Rieff's "Going to Miami: Exiles, Tourists and Refugees in the New America," T.D. Allman's "Miami: City of the Future," and Didion's book. Yeah, yeah, at the time, Miami was hot hot hot, Crockett and Tubbs were in the middle of their run, but...Iran-Contragate was also playing itself out, and Miami was an epicenter of Reagan-era, better-dead-than-Red, Contra War intrigue. Frommer's Cuba was my first guidebook purchase ever!! And what a great buy. I had done most of my travel research online or through word of mouth but with Frommer's, I was able to not only get detailed information of the sites of the country, I was also able to choose between several different options. I like how they categorized the different places within the book so you don't have to waste time with options that are out of your price range or out of your interest.

Frommer's Cuba was my first guidebook purchase ever!! And what a great buy. This guide is not bad at all. It's up-to-date, but I found some inaccuracies in it (like the distance between Holguin and Guradalavaca). We used this guide as a backup for the Moon Handbook, which is a bit outdated, but is much more extensive and better written.

I was drawn to the book by the powerful and fun photographic images. Ledbetter does an outstanding job capturing the images of Cuban life in a way that allows you to both celebrate it and to empathise with the struggle of the Cuban people.

The Essays are an unexpected extra in a book of this nature that make the work a multi-dimensional experience. It appeals to those interested in both Photography and Cuba. I highly recommend it!

McFadden is a delightful, sensitve, insightful writer who shares many of his off-beat thoughts as he strolls throught Cuba and delights us with his observations of people, places and history. A very pleasant read. Check out his early series of 3 travel journals around the great lakes.
