. German Survival Guide: The Language and Culture You Need to Travel With Confidence in Germany and Austria
City Travel Guides > Books > Austria
by: Elizabeth, Ph.D. Bingham
January 31, 2008
The ultimate compliment you can pay a travel guide? "Works as advertised". I'd argue the same goes for this survival guide of Germany and to a less extent, Austria. I acquired a handful, really just a small amount of German as a result of this book, but I used it all for twelve days, and it made a world of difference. The cultural notes, however, were of even greater value: *when* to use phrases is integral to knowing *how*. My only two concerns, a half-star I withhold for each: the two-cassette method of delivery and a too-small glossary/ vocabulary/ dictionary. Pack a CD with the book and it's a five-star value; pack another forty pages of German-English word translations and it's official. However, ... Read More:

. Rick Steves' Germany, Austria, and Switzerland Map: Including Berlin, Munich, Salzburg and Vienna City

I'm both attracted and annoyed by Rick Steves' travel guides. I'm giving this book a 3, not because it's generally okay, but because it's an average of 1 and 5. Steves does some things really well. His maps are really good, for instance. Rather than try to show every street (you'll have an ordinary map for that), he makes it easy to find the places you probably care about (or the ones he thinks you should care about); the museums, train station, etc. are easy to find -- like the map you'd scribble on a cocktail napkin for a friend. Plus, he's reassuring about distances from one place to another (a ten-minute walk to the museum from the train station, etc.). He also does a good-to-excellent job at, hmm, how shall I put this -- describing ... Read More:

This condensed Vienna guidebook is a must for anyone who wishes to visit Vienna, Austria. This book lists all the key sites and minor attractions which are broken down into specific areas of the city; Hofburg, Stephansdom, Schonbrunn, etc. It's easy to read, full of illustrations, and a wealth of basic information. I used it a lot when I was in Vienna for 3 nights in May 2006. It also contains a list of hotels, restaurants and cafes, and things to do like city tours. I recommend taking a city tour because it is a great way to learn a little bit more about the city and, you get to meet some wonderful people from other parts of the world.

The fancy of going to Vienna next summer crossed my mind more than once so I decided to pick this up just to get some more information on the City of Music. It's a very concise book that can be easily toted around in a bag or pocket, which I immediately liked because should I go I would want to keep it on hand. I liked the layout for places to stay, going from campgrounds to hostels, to the hotels, going from one star to five. It has a great listing for restaurants and has the city pretty much covered in respects to places to visit and a calendar of events, which makes planning a trip a lot easier. The history was a nice added bonus for someone not knowing about the city, as well as historical people that spent time/grew up in Vienna (ie: Mozart). Colour photos and things ... Read More:

ROUGH GUIDE TO AUSTRIA Jonathan Bousfield and Rob Humphreys ISBN 1-85828-709-X Earlier this month, my wife and I completed the most recent of several trips to Austria in the last few years. On the whole, the coverage of Austrian towns and cities in this book is so comprehensive that it would be difficult to judge much of it fairly without having been to these places. However, I reviewed the parts of this book about some of the places with which I had familiarity. Generally, I found the descriptions insightful and accurate from my own observations. We stayed once in a tiny town with the two-letter name of "Au" in Vorarlberg, the western-most province of Austria, next to Switzerland. This book says that it is "an undeniably attractive spot" and "If ... Read More:
