The guide itself has beautiful pictures and colorful diagrams, but it really seems more like a nice souvenir or book for your travel collection than a practical guide book you want to accompany you on the trip. It is very, very brief on everything. It's not bad for getting a quick general overview of the islands and some info. on Greek culture, history, climate, etc., perhaps to help you choose the island group you would like to concentrate your trip on. However, as far as a more in-depth, practical guide with real recommendations on hotels and sights, I would recommend a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide to take with you on the trip.

My group of friends, who had all travelled Greece in our backpacking days, benefited greatly from this book. As our trip in July 2002 progressed, we relied more and more heavily on the book. The recommendations from sites to food to hotels proved to be excellent every time. I particularly liked that the lodging and restaurant recommendations had inexpensive through expensive listings, which we used as our budget-mindedness changed during the trip. For anyone beyond backpacking and Lonely Planet, this book is a must.

A beautiful and tender book about one the most remote places in a country overcome by mass tourism. Byron's enthusiasm and wit leaps off the page. A contemporary of Evelyn Waugh, Graham Greene, John Betjeman and others of the so-called Brideshead Generation, Byron was, I think, the greatest talent of the lot because of his passinate conviction that is unobscured by the angst-ridden,boring Catholic fogeyism of the others. Byron's assertion that it is in the Byzantine empire where Hellenic culture reaches its high-point (not in 5th-century Athens)is, in my opinion, correct. I'll take the serene interior of an Orthodox church over the enigmatic Parthenon anytime.

This is like opening a treasure and discovering all the beauty of the world around us, and the worlds within us. Karen shoots from the heart, she gives us her thoughts, her stories, her people. It's not a travel book, not a rough guide to anywhere, it's a search. Karen is searching for herself, discovering herself, discovering all the parts of herself as she travels. We are all of us, many things to many people, but we all need to learn how to be happy in our own skin, and Karen is definitely searching. Sure she goes to Greece, France and Spain and paints us accurate pictures of the places and people she encounters, but the bigger search is within herself.
