. Lonely Planet Greenland & the Arctic
City Travel Guides > Books > Greenland
by: Etain O'Carroll, Mark Elliott
June 15, 2005
I was quite disappointed with this edition of the Arctic & Greenland. It was bad enough that they had to postpone a full year of the release date of this book, they barely even covered much about the Arctic as a whole despite its 'promising' title. The Greenland section was good, but not much different from the previous. Though I was honestly expecting a few more details and on more destinations, since I thought they had a reason for it to separate from the Iceland & the Faroe Islands editions (like the previous three). The Arctic section is almost a joke. Its okay if you don't know much about the Arctic destinations, and just want to get several selected suggestions on a few destinations, but its nothing like the 1st Arctic ... Read More:

. Driving to Greenland
City Travel Guides > Books > Greenland
by: Peter Stark
November 25, 1998
Peter Stark speaks warmly of the 'carnivorous' North in his introductory essay, "A Life Built on Snow." The 'life' he refers to is his own. His grandfather was a skater and iceboater, he and his mother and father were (and are) skiers. His whole family belonged to the winter. All the way through this book, wintery thrills overtake fear--the thrill flying four hundred feet down a ski jump; the thrill of stomping a ski into the snow at the top of a slope, then watching the resulting avalanche take out the whole hill; the thrill of hunting narwhal off Greenland's icy shore. The author drives to Greenland in the sense that he arrives in a two-engine Cessna Skymaster after puddle-jumping across the bleak terrain of Baffin Island, dodging ... Read More:

. Lonely Planet Iceland, Greenland & the Faroe Islands
City Travel Guides > Books > Greenland
by: Graeme & Swaney, Deanna Cornwallis
June 15, 2001
Iceland is famous for its millions of seabirds, especially puffins, that nest on the cliffs and shores. Unfortunately they all depart by September 1 (the puffins often in mid-August), and nowhere did I find that information, although I admit I didn't read the Lonely Planet guide from cover to cover. A group of us who visited in mid-September were very disappointed. In fairness, the other Iceland guides don't seem to warn of this either, nor do the travel brochures.

. This Cold Heaven: Seven Seasons in Greenland
City Travel Guides > Books > Greenland
by: Gretel Ehrlich
October 23, 2001
This book was a treasure that fell, I don't remember whether one morning or night, from Book TV. Hoping to find some tales of native legends and myths of the kind that Sigrid Undset's historical novels had first drawn to my attention, I bought the book. I was not disappointed. Ehrlich weaves her words by alternating the fabric of her seven seasons with allied chapters of other Northern wanderers and explorers. This organization, I feel, makes the book somewhat hard to read in two or three sittings. Yet every page is worth the effort. Having flown over both Greenland and Iceland, I can verify that Greenland is white and ... Read More:
