. Iceland: Land of the Sagas
City Travel Guides > Books > Iceland
by: Jon Krakauer, David Roberts
October 06, 1998
I am glad I got this book just for the text, which is excellent. But I'm surprised at rave reviews for the photos, which to me are absurd. They hardly explore Iceland's unique topography and instead turn it into a generic rugged Anywhere. Notice that in almost every photo there's some sign of habitation: a building, an animal,a person in a boat, etc. The thing that distinguishes Iceland is that there's NO ONE there. You can drive for hours, as I have along the coast on a road that's simply a leveling of the gravel, without seeing another car, building or even a road sign. It's creepy and exhilerating. It's the ideal place to be alone. The landscape is so unusual it reminds you of nothing familiar, nothing from your past. And except for rocky ... Read More:

. Rough Guide Iceland 3e
City Travel Guides > Books > Iceland
by: Rough Guide

I've not used other Rough Guides before, but a friend swears by them, so I tried this one for Iceland. I also got the Insight Guide, which had pretty pictures and background info but little else. The Rough Guide was infinitely more useful, and I totally relied on it during a weeklong trip around Iceland. We drove all the way around the ring road and out to the Westfjords, and the only incorrect piece of information we found in the entire book was the price at one guest house. Plenty of info on where to stay and eat, what to see and do, and background information was useful and interesting. My one criticism is the maps, they are small and only of small regions of the country (but what are you going to do in such a small book?). It would have been ... Read More:

. Lonely Planet Greenland & the Arctic
City Travel Guides > Books > Iceland
by: Etain O'Carroll, Mark Elliott

I was quite disappointed with this edition of the Arctic & Greenland. It was bad enough that they had to postpone a full year of the release date of this book, they barely even covered much about the Arctic as a whole despite its 'promising' title. The Greenland section was good, but not much different from the previous. Though I was honestly expecting a few more details and on more destinations, since I thought they had a reason for it to separate from the Iceland & the Faroe Islands editions (like the previous three). The Arctic section is almost a joke. Its okay if you don't know much about the Arctic destinations, and just want to get several selected suggestions on a few destinations, but its nothing like the 1st Arctic edition. ... Read More:

. Iceland Travel Map
City Travel Guides > Books > Iceland
by: Globetrotter
July 01, 2007
I recently returned from a two week trip to Iceland, and had a great time. I do wish that I had had this map prior to planning my vacation, though. The map is a 1:600,000 scale map of the entire country, along with inset maps of Reykjavik and other areas of interest, such as Akureyri, Heimaey and The Skaftafell National Park. Also included are several representative color photos from different areas, a very useful index, a climate guide, a trilingual legend (English, Icelandic, and German), and a distance table to see how far apart places of interest are. My only desire would be more detailed information on the inset Reykjavik map on locations of hotels, museums, etc. A few places are noted, but a separate inset of 'places of interest' would ...
