. Eyewitness Travel Guides Ireland

Our family moved to Germany almost 2 years ago. Before coming here I purchased the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Germany (also highly recommended). Since then, I have tried a few other books to use during our European travels. NONE of them come close to Eyewitness books. These travel guides are easy to use. They have awesome pictures. I am one who likes to look at pictures to see what is interesting and then read the info. so the pictures are a huge help. The guide for Ireland is just as great as I had expected it to be. The guide is broken into sections and regions. We did purchase a map in addition but for over-all ease and basic facts, the DK books are tops! I will always look to the Eyewitness books first when considering travel destinations.

. Wild Places

This book will be helpful if you already know where you want to go and what you want to do - but when I looked in the index for hostels and hiking - there was no mention. It's not very good if you are at the beginning of your planning as there is not much of a high-level overview (ie: what to bring, when to go, options on where to stay, etc...). I will probably have to get an additional book for the basics.

. McCarthy's Bar: A Journey of Discovery in Ireland
City Travel Guides > Books > Ireland
by: Pete McCarthy
2003-03
Pete McCarthy was actually born Peter Charles McCarthy Robinson in Warrington, a town in the north-west of England. He was the eldest son of an Irish mother, who'd moved to England to work as a nurse. Naturally, there was an Irish influence on his upbringing : he was educated by the Christian Brothers and, in his childhood, spent his summer holidays with his mother's family in West Cork. Before moving into travel writing, Pete had worked on television, and adopted his mother's maiden name to avoid confusion with another actor. (It also spared him from sharing a name with a noted Northern Irish politician - who, unlike our author - has no great love for the Irish Republic). "McCarthy's Bar" was his first book, and follows his travels through Cork, Kerry and up the west ... Read More:
