. Culture Shock! Japan
City Travel Guides > Books > Culture Shock!
by: Rex Shelley, Reiko Makiuchi
1992-10
The only reason this book gets one star is because there are some useful lists in the back of the book about food, vocabulary, etc. But that information does not make it worth it to buy this book. The same information can be found in MANY books out there, preferably something without the negative slant this author seems to take towards Japan. Instead of simply showing the readers the differences between American and Japanese cultures, he insists on adding his own close-minded two cents. Though not overt, the author seems to look down on the Japanese people and culture, mostly because it is different from what he is used to. While there are many people out there who choose to believe a culture is wrong simply because it is different ... Read More:

City Travel Guides > Books > Culture Shock!

the information gained by reading this book is very good, and should be useful for anyone living in or visiting Sweden for a long time. It will be somewhat useful for my proposed short trip this summer, particularly since my partner will be involved in academic issues and a conference during our trip. I suspect there is a better book to prepare for a short visit, but I haven't found it yet. Some parts of the Swedish character as portrayed ring *very true*, especially the idea that they have the best way figured out. I've seen that my whole life with my relatives who are first generation American from Sweden, and it even persists into the second generation. (but maybe that's me too! :-) ) The writing style strikes me as being written ... Read More:

. Culture Shock! Thailand
City Travel Guides > Books > Culture Shock!
from: Graphic Arts Center Publishing Company
1997-07
Culture Shock Thailand is very good start for anyone planning to live in or visit Bangkok, less so for those planning to live elsewhere. But it is really only a start. Many of the rules of etiquette given are over simplified but are good guidelines to start from. For example, the book make it appear as if no one ever dares to touch anyone else on the head, if fact they do so quite often. But for someone arriving for the first time or visiting for a short time it's best to follow this guideline. My main complaint about this book is that it's centered around Bangkok. I found large parts of it less than useful for life in the mid-sized northern town where I lived. For the most part, everything outside Bangkok is classed as "Upcountry" and mentioned ... Read More:

. Culture Shock! Morocco
City Travel Guides > Books > Culture Shock!
by: Orin Hargraves
1995-06
After reading this book, now I'm all the more excited to visit Morocco. Hargraves paints such a vivid picture of the people, the culture. It is a complicated society, very foreign to my understanding and experience. And yet, as I read through it, so many times, page after page, I realize that the culture is so familiar, so like my experience. Most of all, I now understand that it will take a lifetime to learn to adapt to Moroccan culture. I am eager to see how the words lift off the pages and into reality. Almost every page has nuggets and key points to learn and understand, and my copy is mostly yellow from highlighting. One aspect that I wish were different, though- Hargraves appears too often to accept the stratification in Moroccan culture, ... Read More:

. Australia
City Travel Guides > Books > Culture Shock!
by: Ilsa Sharp

"Culture Shock! Australia: A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette" by Ilsa Sharp is a guidebook to living in Australia. This book is not a travel guide, but rather a guide to the people and culture of the country. The main audience for this would be someone who intends to spend a lot of time in Australia, but it can also help business travelers, and even tourists.
I know someone who just moved to Australia from Asia, and from what I have been able to determine, this guide appears to be fairly accurate. I am looking forward to my visit there, which should also give me a better idea on just how accurate it is. Be sure to get the latest edition, as it was updated in 2005 and it is clear from my reading that there were substantial updates.
