. Exploring Australia

I found this book very helpful in planning my Oz holiday. It provides useful recommendations on places and things to visit. The plentiful color pictures add much to the book's appeal. While the book is good for planning your vacation, it does not provide detailed information on accommodation, transportation, or other essential information. Get another guidebook (such as The Rough Guide) to complement this book.

. Exploring Britain

Anyone who thinks Britain is dull will have their minds changed by this colorful guide book. Shorter but livelier than Folder's more traditional guide to Britain ("Fodor's 2000 Great Britain"), "Exploring Britain" has a color picture or two on every page, clear maps of every region of Britain plus larger cities, and dozens of marginal notes on every topic, from "Waterway Vacations" to "Mountain Safety." The main text opens with a number of introductory topics, such as "The Pub" and "Kings and Queens," and then goes on to provide easy-to-follow touring guides to 10 British regions, including London, Scotland and Wales, as well as England. The information is provided in a brisker, ... Read More:

. Exploring Ireland

There are lots of good pictures in this book, including tourist attractions, local people, scenery, events and historic photos. There are many localized maps that show the general area of the sights and events described in the book. There are also good over view maps. Great "focus" sections give detailed information on specific points of interest or significant historic events in Ireland. The Travel Facts section has a comprehensive list of things a traveler might want to know. A seperate accommodation and restraunt section at the end of the book gives recommendations and prices organized by county. The only better Ireland travel guide I have seen is the Eyewitness guide which I would rate about 1/2 star higher.

. Fodor's Exploring Italy, 4th edition

I've used several different brands of travel guides in Europe, the U.S. and Asia and have always found the Fodor's offerings to be comprehensive and useful. That is the reason I'm so disappointed in this book. As a travel guide it is not inexpensive but it does not contain such basic information as lodging options near major train stations, suggestions for low cost lodging away from major tourist haunts, the quirky eating options I've always found in Fodor's other books, or the standard opening times for major sites. For example, Vatican City sites are not listed except in the most superficial way. And, how jaded a traveler must you be to consider St. Peter's a plain church with no important art, as this writer describes it? Michelangelo's Pieta is ... Read More:
