With interviews conducted by women over a period of days, even weeks, and 375 color photographs of women captured in their daily lives, this is an absorbing look into an overlooked world of marriage, women's work and families. . Adventuring in Alaska: The Ultimate Guide to the Great Land
City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club
by: Peggy Wayburn
May 26, 1998
Either the author or Sierra Club should take a look at the wonderful Dorling Kindersley series of Eyewitness Travel Guides to see what a travel book can be -- alternately you might consider a Lonely Planet. The author tells us that you could take a year to see Alaska at a rate of one million acres per day (referring to its vastness) then fails to provide many maps to the sectional chapters of the book, so you're always wondering where you are. Other things lacking are well-organized and clearly located (they exist, but are rudimentary, arbitrary, and difficult to locate) tables and charts of useful information (e.g. temperature, elevation, rainfall, snowfall. The book could benefit from a synopsis of Alaska's regions, with similarities ... Read More:

. Adventuring in New Zealand
City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club
by: Margaret Jeffries
March 21, 2000
My partner and I found "Adventuring..." the single most useful guide for our visit to New Zealand in January 2003. I disagree with the prior negative customer review and wonder if M. Goldstein actually used this book for travel to New Zealand or was merely an armchair traveler seeking amusement. It's true this isn't the kind of general guidebook so ably done by Lonely Planet and others. Jefferies doesn't refer the reader to specific restaurants or lodgings. What she does superbly is to introduce each region of the country with a detailed essay on its flora, fauna, terrain and history. Her knowledge of New Zealand's parklands runs much deeper than a conventional guidebook. While not neglecting famous tourist attractions, she takes you ... Read More:

. Adventuring in Southern Africa
City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club
by: Allen Bechky
October 28, 1997
...I bought this book to make plans for a trip to Zambia but the chapter about this country is only 40 pages long, both verbose and superficial. Don't get fooled by the "Adventuring" in the title, unless your idea of adventure is to hop by plane from lodge to lodge at $200 or $300 a night. More importantly, except for the park entrance fees, this book doesn't list any price at all (I got them from two other, excellent, travel guides). Comments on cheaper accomodations are few and disenchanted. The maps are equally few and over-simplified (the roads don't even appear!...) Finally, I looked at the chapters about the other countries and it certainly didn't change my opinion about this book. Note also that the date of the last edition (October 97) makes it ... Read More:

. ADVENTURING IN THE ALPS
City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club
by: William Reifsnyder
April 12, 1986
This compilation of the best hiking trails in the Alps will give readers plenty of ideas for planning an unforgettable vacation filled with scenic beauty. All aspects of the trip are covered including accommodations, what to bring along, equipment and locale information. A vast list of tourist resources is also included. Although targeted towards Americans, this book is handy for any nationality. The reason I deducted a star is due to the fact that some is the information is outdated. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to enjoy the wondrous beauty of the Alps.

. Adventuring in the California Desert
City Travel Guides > Books > Sierra Club
by: Lynne Foster

Don't buy this if you just want a hiking/camping guide. Here's why: * The author himself mentions that 50% of the book isn't really related to hiking ("adventuring" as in the book's title) * The hikes are not described well. There are no total trail distances given. * There are no maps of trails/trailheads/wilderness areas, and that's what REALLY bugs me. There are virtually no maps in this book. The maps that are there are VERY pitiful. Without maps, this book is virtually useless to me. I would recommend that you look around at other books available if you're after a good hiking guide. Since the average rating is currently at 4.5 I'm gonna give this a 1 to try to add some balance to things...
