Lonely Planet's guide strikes a good balance between providing a "plan of attack" to deal with the logistics of accommodation, transport, and food, and providing good historical, architectural, and archaeological site reviews to make the experience more enjoyable. I recently used it, along with the Blue Guide, on a month's visit to Turkey, and aside from the inevitable discrepancies between prices at the time of writing and the currently higher costs, it was very good. The suggestion in a preceding post that the Blue Guide, and the other mostly-glossy guides recommended, would be better substitutes, shows an appalling ignorance of the Blue Guide, at least. It's a good source for information about historic sites only, with ... Read More:

. Lonely Planet Egypt

Thank goodness I read this book before going to Egypt. I feel it really kept me from being ripped off left and right while I was in Egypt. I can't imagine anyone going there without knowing all the good tips contained in this book. The book though should make a bigger point about how to go about negotiating prices and what to really watch out for. For example, there are seemingly nice people who will approach you in markets or near tourist sites asking to show you around. BE CAREFUL! These people are most likely out to swindle you. I ran into one guy who wanted to show me papyrus at Said's Delta Papyrus Center. Little did I know that this guy was getting a big commission for taking me there if I had agreed to pay exorbitant prices for poor quality ... Read More:

. Time Traveler: Visit Medieval Times, the Viking Age, the Roman World and Ancient Egypt
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Judy Hindley, James Graham-Campbell, Patricia Vanags

This book is recommended for ages 9-12, but my 6-year-old ate it up and my 4-year-old enjoyed it too. I bought it because my girls are going through a knights and castles thing, and this was recommended as a good place to learn about them. I thought we'd just read that section and put it on the shelf until the other subjects came up. Well my 6-year-old saw things differently. She loves this book. She loves the way it is laid out and what she is learning from it. She had no interest in Vikings or Romans or Egyptians before this, but now she wants more on all these topics. And it is a fun book for me to read too. It is reminding me of things I hadn't learned since I was a child, and the diagrams are so clear that maybe I am learning things better than I did ... . Playing Cards In Cairo

Playing Cards in Cairo. ***** Five Stars. I LOVED this book. There are many boring books out there, both fiction and nonfiction, but this wasn't one of them. For me reading "Playing Cards in Cairo" was like reading an exciting novel; I didn't want to put it down.
Although it's real life, I was transported off to fantasy land, picturing myself living in Cairo, being an expat again, enjoying the palm, mango and rubber trees and the carefree lifestyle.
Having personally visited parts of the Middle East, including Iran. I can say that I did not encounter the type of fun and luxury that Hugh Miles experienced in the unique location of Zamalek, Cairo.
The writer's lifestyle fits him like a glove, in his adopted home.....envying him comes to mind....what a glowing ... Read More:
