. Into the Wild

by: Jon Krakauer
August 21, 2007
I read this book before I saw the movie...and of course got a much better appreciation for the story because of that. The first half of the book is primarily focused on Chris's journey as well as his Alaskan adventure, while the second half has more interviews from family members and friends. I really enjoyed how Jon personalized the story by adding in one of his own adventures...showing readers how he completely understood how Chris felt. I loved this book, and the end made me cry.

. Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Jon Krakauer
October 19, 1999
I discovered this book after I read "Into the Wild", and quickly became a huge fan of Jon Krakauer. I am almost done reading "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev, another climber from the 1996 Everest tragedy, and much prefer Jon Krakauers book. Jon is very descriptive in "Into Thin Air", making constant sidenotes to explain mountaineering techniques and other information that readers may not understand. He is very thorough and honest when describing the events before, during, and after the Everest event...making the reader truly be able to picture themselves there. The book has photos as well...so we know what some of the climbers and guides look like...as where crucial events happened on the mountain. "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev seems to ... Read More:

. The Travel Book

Wow... all the countries in the world for 30$! Some of the images are breathtaking, and the description that comes with each country is enough to give an overview and want to make you learn more about this country. The only thing that deceived me a bit was that for some countries, all the pictures depict the same city (e.g. Czech Republic, 5 of the 6 pictures are of Prague) It would have been nice to have little more variety.

. Eiger Dreams: Ventures Among Men and Mountains
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Jon Krakauer
May 19, 1997
People have always pushed to accomplish more. When one of my best friends took up mountain climbing well into his fifties after he back wasn't up to golf any more, I began to wonder what the sport was all about. Having remembered that Jon Krakauer is both a wonderful writer and an adventuresome climber, it seemed like I might learn the answers by reading this book. I was more than amply rewarded for my curiosity.
Knowing that adventures are better heard as a story rather than read, I also opted for Philip Franklin's reading for Books on Tape. This was a stunningly good choice. Mr. Franklin makes you feel like you are right there as you look down from dizzying heights of thousands of feet while being held up by a small patch of crumbling ... Read More:

. Lonely Planet South East Asia on a Shoestring

This is indeed the classic SE Asia book and it keeps getting better. But I agree with the previous reviewer that Indonesia is virtually a different continent adding too much extra weight. However there is a 'mainland SE Asia' book which is very light and easy to carry: Trailblazer's Southeast Asia by Mark Elliott. It's a bit strange at first glance but is packed with maps and when you get used to all the icons (and discover just how easy it is to travel in SE Asia anyway) it may prove all you need. Best of all it's very portable. There are helpful reviews on Amazon.co.uk including mine! Worth thinking about if you want something different.

. Frommer's 500 Places to Take Your Kids Before They Grow Up
City Travel Guides > Books > Specialty Travel
by: Holly Hughes
July 21, 2006
Perhaps it was a fit of angst dealing with his own personal version of a mid-life crisis that led Bill Bryson to tackle the challenge of hiking the 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail! It was certainly a solid understanding of his own personality and clear recognition of his own physical and mental limitations that prompted him to invite his friend, Stephen Katz, an overweight and out of shape recovering alcoholic with an inordinate fondness for snack foods and cream soda to accompany him on this daunting challenge. The demands of the AT ultimately proved too much for Bryson and Katz who sensibly (and with an almost relieved sense of philosophical acceptance) decided to abandon the notion of a complete through hike. But the resulting story, drawn from Bryson's daily journal ... Read More:
