. The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland
City Travel Guides > Books > Air Travel
by: Jim DeFede
August 07, 2003
With all the horrors that took place on September 11th, this book shows the good that took place as well. Some parts are even laugh-out-loud funny - I drew several strange looks from my husband whenever I chuckled - who knew one could be reading a book about 9/11 and laughing? I grew up in Newfoundland myself and know first hand the kind of people who live there. Newfies are a shining example to the rest of the world how one does not need materialistic wealth in order to be generous - just a kind and loving heart. This is a truly amazing story that everyone should read, if only to be reminded of the goodness that people are capable of in even the darkest hours.
Now I wish Defede would write a sequel - since it has been five years since this ... Read More:

. Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster
City Travel Guides > Books > Air Travel
by: Jon Krakauer
April 22, 1997
I discovered this book after I read "Into the Wild", and quickly became a huge fan of Jon Krakauer. I am almost done reading "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev, another climber from the 1996 Everest tragedy, and much prefer Jon Krakauers book. Jon is very descriptive in "Into Thin Air", making constant sidenotes to explain mountaineering techniques and other information that readers may not understand. He is very thorough and honest when describing the events before, during, and after the Everest event...making the reader truly be able to picture themselves there. The book has photos as well...so we know what some of the climbers and guides look like...as where crucial events happened on the mountain. "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev seems to rush through the events, ... Read More:

. Fearless Fliers Handbook
City Travel Guides > Books > Air Travel
by: Debbie Seaman
January 01, 1999
I had never had a fear of flying until about five years ago. A bunch of occurrances...forgetting my husband't suit for a wedding (and having to run back home, and back to the airport with three minutes to spare), 9/11, a few very turbulent flights, being tired and dehydrated (which made me ill) before getting on a plane all added up to a paralyzing fear. Not only did I have a more than subconscious fear of a plane going down, I had a fear of forgetting something important, and of getting sick. The getting sick (yes, throwing up...a lot) was a vicious cycle, because I'd be nervous about getting sick on a flight, and I'd get so nervous that the nerves made me sick! I was a mess and my life was controlled by a fear of flying. If I had a flight planned, I'd wake up terrified ... Read More:
