The Streetwise London map is very convenient if you limit yourself to central London and only need to find important attractions and/or streets of major or moderate significance. But many smaller streets in central London are NOT even named on the map and are not listed in the index. This was definitely a problem for me in finding smaller hotels, restaurants, etc. and lesser tourist attractions. In addition, the map includes some decent subway information, but nothing about buses. The reason for these inadequacies appears to be that the map is not detailed enough for there to be room to label the smaller streets and lesser tourist attractions. In summary, I suspect that this map will work better for first-time visitors than for repeat visitors.

This map got us everywhere we wanted to go in Paris for our 1 week visit. I began using it right off the plane when our shuttle driver didn't know where our apartment was. We used it to keep the rain off our heads, and put it down on dirty benches to protect our clothes. The metro map meant that we never took a wrong train. We spent most of the week on foot and every street we were on was in the map. Most of the items and guides I brought along were looked at in the room before we left every morning, but this map was always with us.

This handy map of London lists the museums and tube stops so you can look at it without having to revel you need help locating a place. Not only does it have the museums it has an underground map to tell you which tube station is closest to your destination. If it's raining the map is plastic coated, how cool is that? I keep a 'post it' stuck inside to list the sites I really, really want to see.

I've used the Streetwise maps in many cities of the world. They're compact, waterproof, and generally useful.

I've tried this one, but the Streetwise format just doesn't seem to work for Florence, which is made up of about five districts and where many of the sights (and there are a great many) are on side streets.

A better guide for Florence is the Knopf Citymap for Florence. It has a separate fold-out page for each district and excellent recommendations for shopping and restaurants for each one, yet is still sturdy and compact.

I recently purchased Knopf's map for Barcelona and was equally pleased. In the future, I'll check first to see if they have a map for cities I visit, and only buy a Streetwise map as a second ... Read More:

The Benchmark state road atlases are in a class by themselves. No one else combines excellent road legibility with vivid shaded-relief imagery of the land forms.

The main competitor is DeLorme's series of state atlases. Here's how they compare: Benchmark is better for primary and secondary roads, better for labeling landmarks, far better on land forms. Benchmark also has a dedicated set of pages showing what government agencies own what lands. DeLorme is larger scale, with occasionally better detail on local features.

Neither is a definitive guide to back-country roads, although Benchmark does more to classify which roads are actually driveable vs. which are mere tracks.
