. My Invented Country CD: A Nostalgic Journey Through Chile
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Isabel Allende
May 15, 2003
Allende's original work must be beautifully and well written in Spanish or else the translator did an excellent job. Seems to me that her writing is almost Faulkner-ish... a kind of classical ranting while accounting for family history and characters through personal experience and skewed perspectives... almost what is called stream of consciousness with many threads off tangent. Her style comes across more like she is thinking out loud instead of just telling a story. Sometimes it seems as if she is singing. Her words boast of a personality stronger than cultural traditions and expectations. Allende displays a personality ready to face the world, yet unwilling to forgo a staccatto past.

. Adult Children of Abusive Parents: A Healing Program for Those Who Have Been Physically, Sexually, or Emotionally Abused
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Steven Farmer
1989-09
I see this is a reprint of an earlier book, and how I missed it is beyond me. Most people know of the "Adult Children of Alcoholics" books, but that never worked for me since my parents didn't touch the stuff, but could have passed for those who did with their anger, depression, rage, and physical and emotional abuse they doled out. Finally, I've found the one book that has helped me. If you're interested in other books dealing with this subject, though they're not "self-help" books, try reading either "Running with Scissors" or "The Bark of the Dogwood." Both deal with abusive parents and yet both have funny elements. Dark humor. Still, worth checking out after your devoured "Adult Children of Abusive Parents." Read this book-break the patterns!!!

. Among the Russians
City Travel Guides > Books > Books on Cassette
by: Colin Thubron
February 12, 1996
Ride around with Thubron in the last years of the crumbling Soviet Union. He takes you into the apartment buildings to find some of the most interesting -- and heartening -- testaments to human color ever encountered in travel writing. There are some truly jaw-dropping observations made by our driver as he stumbles upon people who are dealing with oppression in ways that "westerners" have never had to imagine. Through the vodka, through the endlessly repeating housing blocs, Thubron takes us to a deeper, more personal understanding of life under the Soviets. On the way, he introduces us to individuals (yes, strong individuals) that are not easy to forget.
