. Masked Rider, The: Cycling in West Africa
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Neil Peart
June 11, 2004
I read The Masked Rider after Ghost Rider. That was one of the reasons why I read this one as he caught my interest by the great details of every point on his trip. Masked Rider was the same. He must have kept a great journal to be able to detail every point and feeling on his ride. A lot of the book was soul searching for him as well as trying to figure out his ride companions. It was a book that couldn't be put down as I ride bikes too and could envision everything he was talking about. I would give the book 5 stars if it was not for my next point. As we all know Rush have been around for 30 years now and have sold millions of albums. I too, am one of their biggest fans. However, I could not get over the fact of how cheap Peart is!! From ... . Into Africa: A Journey Through The Ancient Empires
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Marq de Villiers, Sheila Hirtle, Marq De Villiers
May 15, 2002
"Into Africa" is a wonderful, almost breathless, whirlwind tour of the African continent. The travels described in the book may have begun as a search for what remains of the ancient empires that once existed, but became as much a discovery of what Africa is today, and what it will become. Authors Marq De Villiers and Sheila Hirtle divide the book (and the continent) into nine sections, each with its own distinct character and history. Part one looks at southeast Africa, highlights of which include a visit to the impressive stone ruins of Great Zimbabwe, ruins which produce a sound when one's ear is pressed against them, the source unknown. We are introduced to the Makuni or the "Living Stones" of Zambia, named not after the famous explorer and ... Read More:

. The Western Desert of Egypt: An Explorer's Handbook
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Cassandra Vivian
December 01, 2000
The Western Desert is least known for being anything but probably a large stretch of endless sand dunes between Egypt and Libya. However, if Medusa, Hercules, Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, World War II, and the movie the English Patient means anything to you, then this book is finger on the pulse. Why? Because at one point in time they were all inhabitants of the Western Desert. Next to the Empty Quarter in the Saudi Arabia desert, it is one of the most arid places in the world and one of man's last frontiers. Bedouin caravans, travelers and ancient armies crossed these desert plains, at times completely disappearing into the sand. Poems and stories, handed from one generation to the next, speak of the adventures and hardship suffered in this desolate place. The ... Read More:

. I Dreamed Of Africa
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Kuki Gallmann
May 21, 1992
This book is a testimony to the human spirit and how one can overcome extreme adversity and channel that into productive life altering experiences. I laughed and cried and didn't want this book to end. It was so motivating and not at all pretentious. It made me feel as though I could accomplish anything by merely wanting it enough. Mrs Gallman articulated the surroundings so well that it made you feel as though you were sitting next to her. I mourned each time something horrid occurred and laughed at the little things in her every day experiences.
