i picked this book after hearing a friend talk about his trip to egypt.. i expected a more descrptive kind of book about egypt and was pleasantly surprised with the novella flavour that it actually has.. the author introduces very ordinary characters from present times living through their life.. he juxtaposes this with accounts of the life of a jewish merchant and his indian slave from the 10th century.. and then draws parallels between the social issues during the two time periods which seem surprisingly similar.. but the part that i thourougly enjoyed in this book was the village life and characters from the egyptian village and the real life struggles that they were going through.. made me want to hop on the next plane to egypt and ... . Travellers History Of North Africa 2nd Ed
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Barnaby Rogerson
November 01, 1999
Over all, I've found the Traveller's History series of books to be a bit hit or miss. All are good at providing a good deal of the history of a nation or region, but some do so in a manner that is too dry or terse to make for enjoyable reading. Not so A Traveller's History of North Africa. Covering the land that makes up modern-day Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Algeria, Barnaby Rogerson does a fantastic job of telling the history of the land and its peoples from the Neolithic era through the Roman Empire and into the 1990s. It is a fascinating tale of survival, conflict, and change that gives a wonderful insight into the historical forces that have shaped the region and its people.

I've been to Morocco 3 times and am planning my next trip in Oct 2003 so I picked up my usual array of guidebooks. I always get LP's book and I picked this one up for the first time. Needless to say I will not buy it again. I wasn't looking for a history lesson of Morocco, I want to know new and different things to do in the cities and towns...I want suggestions for hotels, restaurants etc. I want to be a Tourist! This book just didn't do it for me.

. Dead Men Don't Leave Tips: Adventures X Africa
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Brandon Wilson
2005-11
Dead Men Don’t Leave Tips is the thrilling, captivating true tale of a honeymooned couple who quit their job, sell their home and cars, and leave everything behind to achieve a dream: cross Africa on a seven-month, 10,000-mile journey from Morocco to Cape Town. Join professional travellers Wilson and Cheryl as they bargain with villagers, struggle with incompetent guides and government officials, pass sleepless nights in deplorable accommodations, cross the Sahara amidst sand storms and blistering heat, meet gorillas and Pygmies face to face, and climb Mount Kilimanjaro, reminding us all along that simple things such as a nice meal, a shower and getting cash can become the ultimate luxuries. The tale is poignant with ironic humor ... Read More:
