. Playing Cards In Cairo
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Hugh Miles
April 29, 2008
Playing Cards in Cairo. ***** Five Stars. I LOVED this book. There are many boring books out there, both fiction and nonfiction, but this wasn't one of them. For me reading "Playing Cards in Cairo" was like reading an exciting novel; I didn't want to put it down.
Although it's real life, I was transported off to fantasy land, picturing myself living in Cairo, being an expat again, enjoying the palm, mango and rubber trees and the carefree lifestyle.
Having personally visited parts of the Middle East, including Iran. I can say that I did not encounter the type of fun and luxury that Hugh Miles experienced in the unique location of Zamalek, Cairo.
The writer's lifestyle fits him like a glove, in his adopted home.....envying ... Read More:

. Rwanda, 3rd: The Bradt Travel Guide
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Philip Briggs
November 01, 2006
Janice Booth's Rwanda guide not only is the most updated travel guidebook on Rwanda, but it also goes culturally/historically where the other guidebooks do not go. I spent several weeks in Rwanda in 2003, finding almost all the information in other guidebooks almost completely useless or irrelevant. Due to the genocide, and subsequent arrival of international aid, the entire infrastructure of the country, especially Kigali, had changed, and so the nuts and bolts information of hotels, transport, and other practicalities found in the Bradt guide were of great use. The personal relationship of the author with Rwandans made it easier for a post-war visitor to understand what the average Rwandan had been through, and the section on "giving back," and ... . Lonely Planet East Africa
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Mary Fitzpatrick, Nick Ray, Tom Parkinson
June 15, 2006
I am a solo female traveler who has just spent three months in East Africa. Every traveler I met had this guide. I agree that it is the 'bible' of east africa. Travelling to this area you don't have much of a choice of travel guides and this gives good information on all the little villages, how to get around, how to survive a matatu.... all the visa infomation, cultural information.... everything you need to have an awesome trip. I also recommend getting the Trekking East Africa guide if you plan on doing any trekking. It goes more in depth then just the East Africa guide and if you find yourself on a mountain you will want a detailed map, which the East Africa guide lacks.
