City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Egyptology: Search for the Tomb of Osiris
.Egyptology: Search for the Tomb of Osiris
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Emily Sands

November 04, 2004
I bought this book for my son even if he is just 1 1/2 years old because i was afraid to forget to buy it when the proper time came for him to explore it...little did i know, i was looking through it and getting fascinated with the beauty of this book on my own.
The book claims to be the journal of a great archeologist found by the grandchild. it's very well made for all those little explorers because it's filled with stuff to feel, read, flip open, un-tie, open and discover. The pictures are very well made and give great details about Egypt and all the great pyramids in a fun and entertaining way.

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Travels with a Tangerine: From Morocco to Turkey in the Footsteps of Islam's Greatest Traveler
.Travels with a Tangerine: From Morocco to Turkey in the Footsteps of Islam's Greatest Traveler
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Tim Mackintosh-Smith

June 08, 2004
I was drawn to this book after realizing that, having done my share of low budget travel in Asia, I would comprehend more from a travel narrative about Arabia then the hyperbolie in the Press and the flood of books proclaiming insights into Islam. I was not disappointed, and in fact was pleasantly surprised at how well Mackintosh-Smith tells his story. His premise, to retrace the route of the famous 14th century Morroccan traveler Ibn Battutah, allows the book to easily offer up comparisons of life in the hey day of Islamic civilization versus our own modern day time of war. This is one of its strengths and delights. You can readily see that people in many ways have not changed much.

I found it refreshing to read of MacKintosh-Smith's ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : A Primate's Memoir: A Neuroscientist's Unconventional Life Among the Baboons
.A Primate's Memoir: A Neuroscientist's Unconventional Life Among the Baboons
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Robert M. Sapolsky

March 05, 2002
I recently listened to this book on tape.
I receive it from the Handicpped Library in Pittsbuurgh, but use them while I am framing up my art work.
Robert has such insight to both the animals he loved as well as the social similar behavior of the Humans he interracted with while in Africa (and America!)
To listen to his description of the elephants with breasts like VOLKSWAGONS, add in the adventrues of Samwelli's house as the elephants ate it, then to finish off, as all of us who come to

live with & love animals.
We find their social behavior similar to our own no matter what motives we initially seek.
That Robert carries a photo of his favorite Baboon to this day, tells a lot about the love he established with ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : Mean and Lowly Things: Snakes, Science, and Survival in the Congo
.Mean and Lowly Things: Snakes, Science, and Survival in the Congo
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Kate Jackson

April 30, 2008
Mean and Lowly Things is a gripping firsthand account of Kate Jackson's adventures as a herpetological fieldworker in the Congo. While the book provides the reader with scientific detail it's written in a style which brings the experience of conducting field research vividly to life, and as such it mirrors the best travel literature. Keen observations of culture and life are balanced by frank description of the frustrations, fears and feelings of inadequacy which all travelers undergo when venturing to the fringes of the map.

It becomes obvious within the first few pages that Jackson passionately believes in the epigram from Aristotle that opens the book: "To understand the world, we must understand mean and lowly things." Every page of the book breathes ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Albert N'Yanza, Great Basin of the Nile and Explorations of the Nile Sources
.The Albert N'Yanza, Great Basin of the Nile and Explorations of the Nile Sources
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Samuel White Baker

2006-03
Baker exemplifies the best and the worst qualities of the Victorian English explorer. He is completely fearless, self-deprecating, calm in a crisis, keenly sensitive to the beauties of nature, loyal to his friends and allies, uncompromising in his opposition to the slave trade. He is also cheerfully certain that the English way of doing things is superior to all others, both practically and morally. His racism is comprehensive and unapologetic. It is easier to get past this, however, than it is with his contemporaries Burton and Speke, because he a far better writer. The opening of the book did a superior job of explaining why the source of the Nile held such fascination for so many. His narrative is a page-turner, despite long periods when his search for the Albert ... Read More:

City Travel Guides Discounted Books : The Lake Regions of Central Africa: Volume I from Zanzibar to Lake Tanganyika
.The Lake Regions of Central Africa: Volume I from Zanzibar to Lake Tanganyika
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Richard Burton

2001-07
The book is a detailed chronological account of nearly three years of difficult travel between Zanzibar and Lake Tanganyika, circa the late 1850's. Nothing escapes Burton's observation. He writes of everything from the local hairstyles to the price of pombe (African beer). He gives detailed descriptions of the landscape, geography, flora, and fauna. He writes of Arabs and the Eastern slave trade. He depicts safari life in the days of human porters and mules. He tells of the people he encounters, though his descriptions of Africans may be offensive to some. There is a wealth of information here, something for everyone with an interest in Eastern Africa, or exploration, or imperialism. The place names have sometimes changed from Burton's time to ours, as have the English spelling ... Read More:
