. Egyptology: Search for the Tomb of Osiris
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Emily Sands
November 04, 2004
I bought this book for my son even if he is just 1 1/2 years old because i was afraid to forget to buy it when the proper time came for him to explore it...little did i know, i was looking through it and getting fascinated with the beauty of this book on my own.
The book claims to be the journal of a great archeologist found by the grandchild. it's very well made for all those little explorers because it's filled with stuff to feel, read, flip open, un-tie, open and discover. The pictures are very well made and give great details about Egypt and all the great pyramids in a fun and entertaining way.

. The Albert N'Yanza, Great Basin of the Nile and Explorations of the Nile Sources
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Samuel White Baker
2006-03
Baker exemplifies the best and the worst qualities of the Victorian English explorer. He is completely fearless, self-deprecating, calm in a crisis, keenly sensitive to the beauties of nature, loyal to his friends and allies, uncompromising in his opposition to the slave trade. He is also cheerfully certain that the English way of doing things is superior to all others, both practically and morally. His racism is comprehensive and unapologetic. It is easier to get past this, however, than it is with his contemporaries Burton and Speke, because he a far better writer. The opening of the book did a superior job of explaining why the source of the Nile held such fascination for so many. His narrative is a page-turner, despite long periods when his search for the Albert ... Read More:

. Lonely Planet Botswana & Namibia
City Travel Guides > Books > Africa
by: Paula Hardy, Matthew D. Firestone
February 15, 2007
The book is a detailed chronological account of nearly three years of difficult travel between Zanzibar and Lake Tanganyika, circa the late 1850's. Nothing escapes Burton's observation. He writes of everything from the local hairstyles to the price of pombe (African beer). He gives detailed descriptions of the landscape, geography, flora, and fauna. He writes of Arabs and the Eastern slave trade. He depicts safari life in the days of human porters and mules. He tells of the people he encounters, though his descriptions of Africans may be offensive to some. There is a wealth of information here, something for everyone with an interest in Eastern Africa, or exploration, or imperialism. The place names have sometimes changed from Burton's time to ours, as have the English spelling ... Read More:
