« City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi » William Dalrymple HarperCollins 1993
« City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi » was my travel reading for my first trip to India in the summer of 2007, a trip which began and ended in Delhi. Having read other writers and other Dalrymple books on India before I set out, I read « City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi » first on my outward journey, and then reviewed it again as we made our way back to Delhi on the last stage of our tour. The book was an invaluable resource, supplementing the ill-informed and poorly spoken guides who were difficult to understand and unable to answer questions in any depth. Dalrymple's book helped me to tie the city and its sites and history together into some sort of coherent ... Read More:

. Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

I am APPALLED by the fact that this book made it to the New York Times bestseller list and, apparently, will be made into a movie with....Julia Roberts (is this true?)
What does this tell us about North American culture and values??? Why should such a shallow piece of work written by such a self-absorbed narcissistic writer receive such fame and accolades? I am truly mystified. This book was all about HERSELF. Poor little me who received an ENORMOUS advance to write this book before she even left the States. Who whined and felt sorry for herself while in Italy, can you imagine??? She had no interest in visiting the fabulous museums, art galleries, churches, etc. but rather spend hundreds of Euros buying lingerie and eating amazing meals ... Read More:

"Kabul Beauty School" was a conflicting book to read. I felt like the author was trying to make a difference in the lives of the Afghanistan women, but then she goes and puts their lives in danger by her ignorance to their culture and also obviously by publishing great detail about their lives in her book.
I did enjoy learning a bit more about the aspects of an Afghanistan's life, but I believe "Reading Lolita in Tehran" is definitely a better pick.
It was unsettling to read about Deborah marrying an Afghanistan man. The marriage is arranged by her friends and Deborah seems to just go along with it without realizing that throughout her book she condemns these arranged marriages. It just seems weird, but then is life in Kabul ever ... Read More:

. Sand Dance: By Camel Across Arabia's Great Southern Desert
City Travel Guides > Books > Asia

This book is a really interesting account of the three Canadians' journey across the Empty Quarter on the Arabian Peninsula. I followed the news reports of their journey back when it was under way, so it was really interesting to read this personal account and get more of a close-up view. I felt like the book basically had three focusses: the desert environment, the camels, and the Bait Kathir Bedouin. The book describes all three in personal detail, and you get a sense for how these three elements all interact. I found the observations of the Bedouin culture very interesting. I also liked having the bits of Arabic dialogue because I study Arabic but I was unfamiliar with this dialect. All around it's a very interesting book.
