. Lonely Planet Thailand
City Travel Guides > Books > Asia
by: Joe Cummings
2003-08
Just returned from 2 months in Southeast Asia, 3 weeks spent in Thailand. We used the LP books for Vietnam and Cambodia as well and thought they were really good. Unfortunately, the information in the LP Thailand was quite out of date already. We also found it to be lacking important information like the names of piers to catch certain ferries, not to mention listing the WRONG bus times, totally incorrect prices of guesthouses and hotels, etc. I wouldn't say it was useless, though we used the travel website called[..]for most of our information. Overall, I was very disappointed with this travel book although unfortunately, I can't see any other titles being that more useful in this changing day and age.

This is an excellent first book by someone who's made quite a name for himself in travel writing - William Dalrymple. "In Xanadu" relates his journey following in the footsteps of Marco Polo to Xanadu, the old capital of the Mongolian empire. This was accomplished while he was a student at Cambridge and he got the idea because this was the first time most of the Karakorum highway was open to travellers, enabling him to follow about 80% of Polo's route for the first time in centuries. The author (with two friends, one for wach half of the journey) went from Jerusalem through Cyprus, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and China. Throughout his journey he researched the traces of Marco Polo and the other aspects of history. As such, he inserts ... Read More:

. Lonely Planet Tibet
City Travel Guides > Books > Asia
by: Bradley Mayhew, Robert Kelly, John Vincent Bellezza
February 15, 2008
Last summer I went to Tibet with this book as a NGO officer. This book is very useful, but no information about dalily life of real Tibeatian. Acturally, in the downtown, there are few Tibetian people. There are only Hun people, majority ethnic group in China, who enjoy their prestages. On the other hands, Tibetian people live in the northen part with surveillance camera. Since some of them are sterllized, real Tibetean people would disapper in this century, apart from the exiles in Indea.
