. Lonely Planet South East Asia on a Shoestring
City Travel Guides > Books > Asia
by: China Williams
March 15, 2006
This is indeed the classic SE Asia book and it keeps getting better. But I agree with the previous reviewer that Indonesia is virtually a different continent adding too much extra weight. However there is a 'mainland SE Asia' book which is very light and easy to carry: Trailblazer's Southeast Asia by Mark Elliott. It's a bit strange at first glance but is packed with maps and when you get used to all the icons (and discover just how easy it is to travel in SE Asia anyway) it may prove all you need. Best of all it's very portable. There are helpful reviews on Amazon.co.uk including mine! Worth thinking about if you want something different.

. King of Russia: A Year in the Russian Super League
City Travel Guides > Books > Asia
by: Dave King, Eric Duhatschek
October 02, 2007
Ex-Canadian Olympic team coach Dave King seems the perfect guy to be the first Canadian coach in Russia's Super League (now known as the Continental Hockey League) and we're so lucky he kept this running diary/journal of his time there. Eric "Du-hat-trick" adds his usual editing and tight writing style as the ghost writer on this and it shows as this is a real page turner.
The best thing you learn about the hockey part is how Russians train and how dedicated most of them are to drills and training (both on- and off-ice). If anyone ever has any doubts about their heart (hello, Don Cherry), they need to read this book. The added bonus was King was coaching Evgeni Malkin this particular year before he moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins ... Read More:

My copy of this title has the Chinese in large, useful characters right next to the maps. Only if there's no map for a small town is the Chinese listed in the back, with the information for each town handily grouped together in alphabetical order. And like every other guide book, the map for a town is in the middle of the text talking about that town. So what's hard to find? The hotels and places to see are right next to the map in most cases. And since the towns only have one map, what's to guess about which maps things are on? I don't know about the Beijing and Shanghai guides, but of course there will be a lot of repeated information. The sights don't change, after all. The best place to eat is the same. Bus 47 still runs ... Read More:
