I was highly impressed with this terrifically real, but straightforward recital of events in really unusual circumstances. For example, the author did not editorialize on whether the village people working throughout the night to process their chickens, so they could obtain more material goods, was a good or bad thing. Likewise with the picture of them working in (I presume) a hot, smoky kitchen in Chicken Willys.

As a typical capitalist American, I of course would have set up the same, but I also want to ask the author: Are these good people better off as they were, or after taking up the reins of commerce?

This new author has real talent.

White Savages in the South Seas is a candid look at the not so glamourous lives of real people living in the South Pacific. This book is filled with fasinating characters like Susy No Pants and interesting adventures. Their stories are well written with great passion and witty humor. I enjoyed every moment.

No, that's not another name for Australia. It's the use of words whose sound suggests the sense. Mr. Stiller employs the technique ad nauseum. Never have I read a paragraph that consists entirely of the letters B (1 time), O (6 times), M (9 times), S (22 times), and H (5 times). You can imagine my suspense, which was only heightened by a paragraph on the next page, as follows: "Whoooowhhooooouuuuuouuuwhouuuuuuu." This goes on and on.

There is a fascinating story underlying the poor writing style. The technique is bad, as is the failure to provide more insight into the effect of the journey on character development. Ultimately, these issues render the book nearly unreadable.

This is an AWESOME book. We used it extensively during our week in Maui. Great recommendations for tour guides, trip excursion companies, etc. I usually just use AAA guide books with good success and happened to see this book a couple of days before leaving for Hawaii with our family. It made our trip so much better and was right on mark!. Highly recommended! Only after I returned did I learn that there was an edition on Maui itself, which I did not use (obviously). Never knew the Dummies series included books on specific travel places like this.
