. Frommer's Honolulu, Waikiki & Oahu
City Travel Guides > Books > Australia and South Pacific
by: Jeanette Foster
November 05, 2007
I used this book during a week's stay on Oahu. Since it was my vist time visiting Hawaii, this book was adequate. It did not go into details on any one thing, which may be a weakness. The maps ware small. They seem best suited for walking tours, certainly not for driving purposes. Some of the data such as phone numbers or hours of business was outdated. As I said, it was my first visit. My friends helped me see much more of Oahu than I would have been exposed to had I just followed the book. I don't think I would use this book on a return trip to Hawaii.

. Culture Shock: Australia
City Travel Guides > Books > Australia and South Pacific
by: Ilsa Sharp
1992-02
"Culture Shock! Australia: A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette" by Ilsa Sharp is a guidebook to living in Australia. This book is not a travel guide, but rather a guide to the people and culture of the country. The main audience for this would be someone who intends to spend a lot of time in Australia, but it can also help business travelers, and even tourists.
I know someone who just moved to Australia from Asia, and from what I have been able to determine, this guide appears to be fairly accurate. I am looking forward to my visit there, which should also give me a better idea on just how accurate it is. Be sure to get the latest edition, as it was updated in 2005 and it is clear from my reading that there were substantial ... Read More:

Not exactly LP, but it tells stories of two places that been extremely dangerous and one that still is.in SL conflict(the hunter) was fuelled by greed, diamonds made many Lebanese come to SL and the become rich on trading, MEA (middle east airlines) flew in several of their big passenger planes to rescue it's citizens, SL isn't a tourist resort nowadays like The Gambia today, but still not extremely dangerous. Bougainville (the Heaven) was Oz mining company property until the fighting drove them of the island, PNG gov tried to recruit SA mercs to "conquer" the island and start mining again, but it failed badly. Chechenya (the Hammer) was also about greed, in this case oil-pipelines from Read More:

. Lonely Planet Tahiti & French Polynesia
City Travel Guides > Books > Australia and South Pacific
by: Becca Blond, Celeste Brash
May 15, 2006
I've used many Lonely Planet (LP) guides and found this one to be lacking their usual detail. I got the sense much hotel information was pilfered from Web surfing the basic info, rather than first-person investigation. While still a good book to take, next time (and there will be a next time because Tahiti is wonderful) I'll be sure take another guide along with it, and to thoroughly read actual travelers' online reviews. I'll also know the questions I need to ask before booking. My sense was that the reviewers weren't seeing things through the fresh-eyes of a first time traveler. The details, such as directions accommodation features were often lacking. One thing I've always liked about LP is that they will list small locally owned budget ... Read More:
