This book is a fascinating journey that explores the power of simply believing in something, whether it be religion, myth, an icon or people themselves. It presents facts without prejudice yet reveals fascinating details of the author's personal, emotional and geographical journey as he follows his great grandfather's footsteps to the other side of the world. It combines stories of academia, theology, history and contemporary issues in a non-confrontational yet intriguing presentation of generations and cultures colliding in our ever-shrinking global community. I highly recommend reading Charles Montgomery's "The Last Heathen". It is an exceptional story which deserves a captive audience.

Its nice and tiny enough to put in your purse and it does have some nice maps at the end of the book. That said, the book is hard to follow with detailed descriptions (unless you have another travel guide to see as well)
It does have some nice recommendations for travellers especially those on a low budget and it is worth supplementing a book like "Eyewitness Travel Guides: Australia"

Long passages written in a verbose authoritative style make this book hard to follow. I think it is badly in need of an editor.

They should sell it along with a cowbell because so many tourists have unknowingly bought into their shtick. This new edition almost word for word matches the previous edition.

I found the restaurant list needs updating. This guide just has all sorts of major errors that warrented the return.

whatever you do, don't substitute the Hawaii Revealed guide for this book. Lonely Planet Hawaii has everything in it. It contains no fluffy puff stuff or downer opinions. Our copy is worn from four weeks on the road and although pretty beat up, we deem it gospel. Traditionally the Lonely Planets are written by real travelers who are objective and write really well. They have no bones to pick. This is no exception.
