Having been to the Palm Springs area on vacation and business, I decided to make a longer visit this year. I was therefore delighted to discover that this new guide had been published on the desert communities and eagerly looked forward to some good in-depth, insider information. My delight was shortlived, however, on seeing the book, which I found to be a rather arid compilation and rehash of information put out by the local tourism offices: all-the-usual-suspects restaurant choices & skim-the-surface places to stay and sights. The guide is not badly done, is well organized enough, and could be a useful starting place for the first-time visitor; but I found it did not offer much value-added beyond the good quality information I received ... If you take the time to read the introduction to this book, you'll find that the editor put together an experienced team of writers for this (first) edition of Best Places Las Vegas, many of whom are Las Vegas natives or almost so. Too often, guidebooks are written by people who fly into a place for four to six weeks, learn as much as they can (which is not much) and then bang out a book based on that and a little follow up research. Not so with this book; truly, it reads almost more valuable for a resident than a visitor, as most visitors are tourists who are looking for guides on how to be a tourist, not insider information. Mr. Reza has also written and edited for Time Out Guides, a series I adore and trust, so I think it's better to take into ... Read More:

I was very disappointed in this book. I am a native to Northern California and wanted to learn more about our Coast, since I live within an hour's drive of many beaches. The author skipped over most of the smaller beaches and just gave incredibly short summaries of the most popular places - I did not need a book for this information! The authors majored on restaurants and lodgings, however, since they only gave listings for the more popular sites, none of the information was helpful to me. I was planning a trip to Pacifica, and there wasn't a single entry on that entire town!! There are probably 3 hotels (at least) and many, many restaurants and beaches there. But there was not even a paragraph about any of it.

And Northern California tends to be a pricey place. But while most of the other "Best Places" books include a wide range of places, from great ethnic hole-in-the-wall eateries to five-star dining experiences, this particular volume just piles on the five-star recommendations.
