My husband and I keep this book in our car so that whenever we're in Portland we can grab it quickly. In addition to the alphabetical listing and descriptions of 200 reasonably priced restaurants, the book has an excellent index. You can look up restaurants by section of town or by the type / style of food you want. Cheap Eats has given us the opportunity to sample many different restaurants that we would never have found without it. Instead of picking the same places over and over, you can expand your choices...and eat well inexpensively.

The Best Places series of guidebooks is the best I've ever used. Many guidebooks strive for comprehensiveness. This one doesn't. Instead, it offers a limited (but still copious) number of descriptions of good places (especially for food). The reviews are longer than the usual guidebook reviews, giving you a good sense of the atmosphere and menu. I've never had a bad meal following a recommendation of this book. My only regret is that this guidebook series is only available for the Pacific coast - I think that reflects on their dedication to quality and actually sampling all the places they list.

We keep a copy of this book in our guest room. Lots of people who have stayed with us have used it and have been very happy with the information it contains (short trips to take or activities to do in and around the Seattle area). My only criticism is that the section with restaurant recommendations is lacking -- but the dining culture of Seattle changes so frequently that this isn't a significant negative for a general-purpose "Best Places" book.
