. Blue Guide Israel And The Palestinian Territories
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide

I purchased this book (based on very positive experience with the Blue Guide to Germany) and was disappointed. I advise you to look elsewhere, keeping the following information in mind. If I had browsed in a bookstore first, I would not have bought it. The book is very well-organized and is a convenient size for travelling around with. The maps in it are good, but there should be more regional maps with more details, such as distances. This book is very heavy on archeological information; the cover describes author Kay Prag as "an expert in the archaeology of the Near East" -- if you are looking for that, this book should meet that need. It also gives A LOT of historical background for SOME places. Not counting ... Read More:

This guidebook is great at what it does, but is otherwise limited. It's a really excellent reference to the history, churches, and monuments of Istanbul, often going into exhaustive detail such as what day (On April 23, 1542 at 12 noon, etc.) something happened. (It must be said, however, that Freely gets a bit enthusiastic about some very minor monuments and mosques which do not seem to really deserve it.) It has great information on all the major and minor mosques and other monuments around Istanbul, including maps and diagrams. In this sense, I found it very useful on my trip. As a general guidebook, however, it falls short. This is not the author's interest, and lists of hotels, restaurants and bars are ... Read More:

I lived and worked in Ankara for three years, and used this guide and its predecessor every time I visited Istanbul. If you want to get off the beaten track, or if you really want to understand what you're looking at, this is the guide for you. If you want something glossy and light, as some of the other reviewers seemed to have wanted, this isn't for you. It's an in-depth guide, meant for people who are interested in culture, history, and architecture. It's not a picture book, nor is it designed to let you plan where you'll stay or where you'll eat, though it does provide limited, good recommendations. In one year I'm returning to Turkey to live in Istanbul for four years. I'll be taking this guide with me to explore what I didn't get to see before, and ... Read More:

. Blue Guide Jordan
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Sue Rollin
2002-01
Jordan is a country that is known to most Westerners mainly for its front-line role in the Arab-Israeli conflict; for the spectacular Nabataean temples carved into cliff-faces at Petra; and as the scene of Lawrence of Arabia's adventures during the First World War. Now that it has a formal peace treaty with Israel, more westerners are making their way to Jordan. Those who do will find the Blue Guide to Jordan an invaluable companion. I also recommend it highly to armchair travelers who just want to learn more about this little-known but intriguing country. As a series, the Blue Guides have long been famous among discriminating travelers for their astonishingly comprehensive coverage of history, archaeology, architecture, and art. At the same time, the ... Read More:
