. Blue Guide Rome
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Alta Macadam

This book divides Rome into 29 walking tours. Each one takes about a day. Maybe you could do two per day in the summer. A few of the tours have a common theme, but most of them just cover a region of the city. The focus is on cultural/historical sites. There's very little about where to eat, sleep, or shop. The author is thorough and provides a lot of insight. The book reads as a folksy continuous narrative by a knowledgeable and perceptive guide. If you have a month in Rome, you could use this book to get a great tour. Many tourists would find this book difficult to use. Suppose you're in Rome for a few days, not nearly enough time to walk all 29 tours. There is no easy way to use this book to prioritize which sites to ... Read More:

. Blue Guide Scotland
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Elspeth Wills
September 27, 2001
My sister and I recently traveled to Scotland for a 10-day holiday. We found the Blue Guide to be an excellent resource for information on the history and culture of Scotland. The history of various buildings and sites was provided in great detail as were descriptions of building interiors. The walks outlined were good and led one to lesser-known locations. I found there to be several weaknesses, though. The book could not be used for planning a trip in terms of accomodations, shopping or restaurants as very little information is provided regarding those specifics. The index is woefully inadequate requiring one to try and remember which region a small town is located in order to find information. Attractions and sites are not ... Read More:

. Blue Guide Sicily
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Ellen Grady
April 29, 2003
Yes, as other reviewers write, Ellen Grady's book is full of rich and detailed history of the places you'll visit, but it lacks essential practical information. We used it only for Taormina (beautiful town, highly recommended) and Catania (Sicily's second largest city, which you could skip), so the book may be more helpful elsewhere on the island. As for these two destinations, the book lacked essential information (like the frequency and cost of various public transportation options between towns). Also, it had virtually no narrative description of restaurants, just a mere listing. If I wanted history, I would have bought a history book. I wanted practical information to get the best out of our short time on the island, this book didn't ... Read More:
