. Blue Guide: Albania
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: James Pettifer
1996-05
This reminds me of one of those coffee table books people used to buy because they felt they ought. a) because it is the only guide on the market b) because every other traveller seems to have one c) it looks nice Whether it suits its purpose is quite another matter. Put simply if you're into history in a big way and really want to take on the Albanian cause then this will be indispensible. If you want an up to date guide to the actual practical information the book is almost useless. First, it is clear the author had a lot of help on the way from prearranged contacts eager to be in the book and second the author obviously had a car and I would hazard a guess a driver (at the cost of the Blue Guide). ... . Blue Guide Poland
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide

I really found this new book in the Blue Guide series to be of great value. It covers many of the travel plans I intend to make and places I want to visit. It covers the people, the land and the artistic treasures of this vastly misunderstood country. There are effective itineraries that explore beautiful landscapes, scenic and rustic towns, and the major cities, including Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk and Wroclaw. This guide provides an insider's view of Poland, from its music, myths, folklore, to its art, architecture, cinema, literature, food, drink and colorful history. This is a land of a proud and great people. I have to thank my co-workers for this one.

. Blue Guide To Rome
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Alta Macadam
April 29, 2003
This book divides Rome into 29 walking tours. Each one takes about a day. Maybe you could do two per day in the summer. A few of the tours have a common theme, but most of them just cover a region of the city. The focus is on cultural/historical sites. There's very little about where to eat, sleep, or shop. The author is thorough and provides a lot of insight. The book reads as a folksy continuous narrative by a knowledgeable and perceptive guide. If you have a month in Rome, you could use this book to get a great tour. Many tourists would find this book difficult to use. Suppose you're in Rome for a few days, not nearly enough time to walk all 29 tours. There is no easy way to use this book to prioritize which sites to visit. Read More:

. Blue Guide Barcelona
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Michael Jacobs
November 26, 2002
Was no one paying attention? The editor for this book should be fired. With the format of detailing the artistic/architectural sites of interest, with reviews of stores and restaurants/eateries, this was a specialist type travel book that had potential. But where it fails horrible is in it's usability: There is no way to FIND the places the book is reviewing. When the book tells you there is a great restaurant on such-and-such a street, you can't find the street or the location. There are a few pages of maps in the back, but no street index, no little numbers cross referencing locations, nothing. Very frustrating. Most of the information about the museums or cultural sights can be found in other books. You will need a different book or map with ... Read More:

. Blue Guide Prague
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Jasper Tilbury
June 28, 2004
In theory, this would be a great travel guide -- it goes into far greater detail than other guides about the sights and their historic importance. However, in pratice, this guide is very difficult to use. The entire guide is written in narrative form, as if you were following a walk. Unfortunately, the walks are irritatingly not indicated on a map, so they're difficult to follow or visualize. Moreover, the guide constantly uses compass directions in its descriptions -- difficult enough to follow outdoors when the guide directs you down meandering paths, and downright useless when it describes building interiors in the same way. Who can tell from the darkness inside of a building which is the northwest archway? The guide also suffers from poor ... Read More:

. Blue Guide Burgandy
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Ian Ousby
September 23, 1992
My family followed this book to our dream vacation in the French countryside, driving through Burgundy's luscious scenery to ancient villages, towns and castles, and country churches and chateaux. For the cultural traveler, this book (as are all of the Blue Guides) is close to exhaustive. It extensively covers the architecture, art objects and history of apparently every site in Burgundy, with town maps and floor plans of important churches. It is arranged in tours, which take you up streets and into delightful nooks and crannies and courtyards you'd never find on your own in less than a hundred years of looking. In the countryside, it'll take you along luscious quiet roads, through fields and pastures, and along canals and rivers into lovely towns where ... Read More:

. Blue Guide Tuscany
City Travel Guides > Books > Blue Guide
by: Alta Macadam
October 21, 1999
If you really want to see Tuscany, this it: this book will take you to places you wouldn't find any other way, from charming villages that are way off the beaten track, down colorful streets and staircases to hidden piazzi that you would have walked right past, into courtyards, and out to ancient country churches with masterpieces on the altar. The Blue Guide to Tuscany is 510 pages long, plus two indexes: the author, Alta Macadam, has apparently combed every city, town and hamlet in Tuscany, traveled every road and lane, wangled her way into every locked church and described its treasures, and surveyed every provincial museum. She includes practically everything of any interest at all in the entire province of Tuscany, including the provenance of every work ... Read More:
